Cutting Basjoo corm while dormant

I'm finally going to winterize my Basjoo clumps this weekend. I live in a windy spot and one of the clumps is very exposed and tough to keep protected. Last year they died down to the ground but I'd like to have a head start next summer. I'm thinking about just digging this one up and keeping it in the (unheated) garage for the winter but it's a few years old and awfully wide. If I cut the corm in half to make 2 more manageable smaller clumps while it's already basically dormant will that kill the plant?
