Dave in NoVA I made my first Key lime pie sometime this year and it was fantastic. Nobody else in the family would touch it so I ate it all by myself. I kinda like not having to share. lol.

LOL Kelly - you got PJIC-itis (Plant-Jumps-Into-Cart). :-D I have a Lowes not far away and the one time I've been there over the summer, I never saw an citrus offered.

Dave - those limes look real pretty and I know that pie was delish!

And LOL @ Denise!!!! You grow 'em, you make pie from 'em, it's YOURS! :-D

jenny_in_se_pa Have you ever made a key lime pie? The condensed milk is soo good all by itself. I don't even have to make a pie to eat that. Unfortunately, all that sugar can make my heart go out of rhythm and I am an AFIB patient as is. lol. I cannot see food go to waste. Medical condition or not. hahaha

Yay! What a pretty tree! I love key limes too...like Dave, in my house, we love key lime pie. I am actually overwhelmed with them at the moment...lol...I think there are 50+ sitting on my counter. I was thinly of trying a key lime cheesecake to vary things up a bit. Congratulations on your little tree!

Denise - I made one about 10 years ago using some bottled key lime juice and it turned out pretty good. I expect using some fresh-squeezed would be even better! I use sweetened condensed milk with sweet potato pie too. It really does make a difference. I know you probably tried to hold yourself back but then said... nahhh! LOL

jenny, You are right, I did try to refrain from eating the pie, but nobody would take more than a bite to sample it. Considering all the trouble I went to make it, there is no way I am going to let it go to waste. Also, I have a really big sweet tooth. Once I eat something sweet, I have to have more. Don't get me started on chocolate. lol.

I used the fresh key lime juice rather than the bottled stuff. Do you know if there is a difference between the two in flavor? The bottled lemon juice I have tastes nasty compared to fresh because it's from concentrate.

Denise - I think many of the bottled juices are from concentrate and I expect that unless you get it from a local place that bottles their own, the retail types usually also have to have some type of preservative in them to be shelf stable so you can sometimes get an off taste. I think what I did was use the bottled juice to supplement the juice squeezed from a bag of key limes that I had gotten from a local produce place because I didn't have enough juice for the recipe. It still turned out pretty good as the key limes have their own unique flavor and there was enough of the fresh squeezed to get that flavor to come through in the pie.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Dave, that pie has my mouth watering!! I made one not too long ago and ended up using two full bags of key limes from the grocery store. It was quite a bit of work, but well worth it! Jenny LOL! I’m going to tell my husband that’s what happened with the next tree lol!

Congratulations on your new tree, Kelley! Does your tree have lots of thorns? Want to know if a grafted key lime has lots of thorns. My key lime seedling is almost one year old and very thorny

sunshine - there are 2 kinds of key limes being sold.. the "regular" kind which is thorny (my grafted "regular" FW one is thorny) and the "Mexican thornless", which is pretty much thornless (the one I had was so precocious with the growth last winter that it became an aphid magnet, and with all the water and HO spraying and fussing, it eventually got stressed and finally gave up the ghost).

Sunshine, mine is a rooted cutting from Record Buck Farms, and it is the thorniest plant on my property! More so than my roses lol. The store had “thornless“ key limes, but they were also labeled as Lakeland Limequats.

Thanks Jenny and Kelley! The key lime seedling above is one of the "twins" from a polyebryonic seed, it grows well, I am very happy with it so far :) The other "twin" seedling is not so much of a tree, but it's hanging in there. They have completely different looking leaves and growth speed. Here is the picture of them together in September:

You can find a wealth of information on this citrus forum to properly care for them. Use the search feature on citrus forum to look up care for each variety or any general topic.

Yeah I’ve done some searches I think I’m going to try the low light low temperature style and hope that makes them semi dormant. All seem to be rooted cuttings
