Plant Adam, just joey in pots now and bring them into your basement, grow them under light. They are tender roses for your zone. They will die if you leave them outside in the garden. Are the DAs grafted? Make sure the grafted parts are cover in the garden. That’s what I am going to do tomorrow, cover the roses with mulch.

I have Adam and just Joy in pots, I moved them in the garages already for the winter, and will water them once a month. I have to look for Adam, I combined a lot of tender roses with potted rose trees this summer, not sure which garage Adam went in.......

Montreal is much colder than my area (zone 6a in NY near Canada), I am not sure if roses would be ok in attached garages over there.

Cynthia, I think Lige is in US zone 4, Canadian zone 5a.

Adam and Just Joey would be dead before Feb......they can’t take the cold in your area even you cover them with 20 meters mulch......you only can grow them in pots and move them indoors during the winter months in zone 3a.

Thank you for your suggestion summersrhythm , It is not realistic to grow the roses in pots and move them in the garbage here. Actually my dream backyard is English style garden with roses even it sounds like.....I still like to try:). Last winter the survived Perfume melody which belongs floribundas really encouraged me a lot . That's why I planted 15 no hardys this summer. BTY You are right I am also wondering there is difference of the hardiness zone between US & CA. In your zone, with the good protection. the roses in ground has no problem in winter.

I still have problems in my zone growing tender roses. I have lost so many, in hundreds over the years. Adam and Just Joey are tender for my zone too. I have just over a hundred potted rose, may be around 130-140. I moved most of them in the garages during the winter months, the tender tea roses I grow them in the basement under lights every winter. This year I ran out of room in the garages, so 38 potted rose trees went in the in-law apartment. Lol Will have to keep eyes on those.

Lige, i am also in Montreal, and grow many David Austin’s, hybrid teas, and old garden roses. I do not winter protect any of them any more, but they are planted with the graft union 2-3 inches deep. That, combined with plenty of snow cover, is protection enough. I haven't lost any roses in the ground. The ones in pots, I have mixed results with,but that is probably because I keep them in an attached shed. They would do better in an attached garage I’m sure. You may be surprised at what survives in your garden. Snow is the best insulation you can have.

I forget to mention that the roses survive just fine, but I have to prune them down quite low in the spring to remove dead canes. By June they’ve bounced right back!

Lige, don't despair, your lowest "wind-chill" temperature isn't the basis for your real climate zone. Montreal has a reasonable climate for many roses.

Snow cover is good protection for roses as maintains an even freezing temperature and provides wind protection. Don't use a snow blower that piles the snow from above and don't throw shovels of snow on the branches, build the snow from the bottom up.

Lige is in US zone 3 or 4, not in US zone 5.

I don't think fully covering the roses with snow will make much difference. You will still lose some cane. As far as having heavy snow on the roses, it won't hurt them unless you try to brush or shake them off while they're frozen. Trying to clean them off usually does more damage than good. Leave them alone and as the snow melts they will bounce back up on their own.

Seil, do you still have your potted Just Joey? There was a lady named Karen in Michigan who lost Just Joey 4 times in 4 years( lost one each year) in zone 5. Do you remember her? I am wondering what happened to her. It would be great if she could tell us her story about growing Just Joey in zone 5.

The name of the roses are :1 Bolero has very nice scent. 2, DA heritage which is a bit smaller than I thought. maybe next year would be better. 3, HT sunbelt savannah, I like its form before the fully opening with good fragrance. 4 Eden climber no scent.

Heritage is the only one of yours I grow, and has no problem making it through winter. All my Austins do fine. In the spring you may have to prune right down almost to the graft before you see live wood, but they all sprout quickly and bloom by mid-end of June. The others you mention i have no experience with. My backyard is already covered in snow so all my 50 or so roses are safely tucked away. Winter has come early, and with a vengeance!

Lige, since I’ve gardened in So California my whole life, I have nothing to contribute about rose protection during winter and snow. I just wanted to say that the photo you posted of your garden is absolutely gorgeous! It’s truly beautiful. I love your white lupine. You have some lovely roses, and I sure understand why you’d want to see those beauties again next summer.

Judith， Your garden would be very beautiful with over 50 roses and it also give me much more cofidence for building my rose garden. I will update for sure next season . BTW, could you please share some ideas deal with the disease like powdery mildew and japanese beetle that made me frustrated from late July to september. I tried the soda & dishwashing liquid mix, but it did not work well.

I only have occasional powdery mildew on my Therese Bugnet, and I just leave it, but ive Read about a milk and water mixture, that some people have tried. I’m not sure, maybe one part milk to 4 or 5 parts water? You might want to google that to check. So far, touch wood, I havent had a problem with Japanese beetles in my yard. I see maybe four or five in mid summer, knock them into soapy water and that’s it. But I know they are in my neighbourhood because there are tons of them in my community vegetable garden:0(

The biggest problem I have is rose midge, and to me it is the worst thing you can have in a Rose garden. I battle it every year, but It’s a losing battle, so I’ve learned to enjoy the blooms that I do get and not get too discouraged. Hopefully You will never have to deal with them!

I do have Ebb Tide and love the fragrance of that one too. The blooms are gorgeous purple in the spring and fall, but unfortunately much smaller, and a bright fuschia pink when it gets hot.

i have many hybrid teas, rugosas, some bourbons, hybrid perpetuals, and other old garden roses. They all do pretty well here.

You have many varieties. Most of DAs you have I didn't see in nursery store. Where did you buy them? My Ebb has same problem. I got it from nursery store with nice big blossom. then it was getting much smaller in my garden. Did you move the roses in pot to garage or buried them with pot in winter?

For the first year performance. The Just Joey & crown of princess margareta are really my favorites this year. Especially Just joey in September. It gave me almost over 5" big blossom with nice scent and last 1 week which is longer than DAs. Do you have any recommend I might grow next year?

I bought all my roses from Pickering (no longer in business) and Palatine mail order nurseries. I stored my potted roses in my attached shed under the deck, and lost many every year over winter. Next year I will try my attached garage, which should work better.
