Generations of Living (and Dead I suppose) are what made Hogwarts so cozy! Or at least, the set designers were able to evoke that impression.

You've got a good start, the red sofa is delicious and I love the wall colour. Now you need to add layers of life and living to the room. Rugs, throws, cushions, books, books, books, antique store treasures.

You can't really *decorate* life into your room, you have to *live* it in! The cozy memories will come, until then use this room all the time! Make it a goal to spend at least an hour in there every day just relaxing.

Bring in some buffalo checks or plaid or denim blue and soft brown fabrics and see what you think. It's beautiful!!

If you know you want a Potteresque room (aka English style), then consider buying the rug next. It will visually push back on the walls and trim, because rugs are bossy that way. I think the red is amazing! Adding beige might tone down the formality and will work with both that great red and the white. You can add whimsy with a great chandelier and I agree that monkeys will fit the style and bring in some humor. But what do you want the space to do for you? A dining room or a study? A rich tufted brown ottoman would also look great, in velvet or leather. Your room has great bones and a beautiful paint job. Play with the chandelier and think British campaign style with rattan, leather, canvas, velvet to bring in an elegant informality. Green is opposite the wheel and a floor plat of substantial height with an upright could add great nighttime frame. Great room, play and have fun with it.

I agree with Lidia...amazing red, just needs some lighter natural tones to contrast with the heavy furniture, the beige & rattan she suggests would make a huge difference. A lighter weight, even minimalist, light fixture and maybe paint the interior section of the ceiling a lighter color (or paper that section with something unexpected...this could be the whimsy addition!)

OMG!just noticed your couch and chair. Wow! Please think about adding an oriental style rug that’s most;y beiges with a bit of crimson. Then a HUGE ottoman also light colored with a texture, woven leather, velvet or rattan. Soften that awesome wing chair with a quirky pillow, maybe a weathered union jack pattern in cotton. The room begs for curated elegance that is comfortable. Your room will look and feel amazing when done! You have a terrific start. Also, indirect lighting, spot lots in potted flor plants as well as some great (not serious) art will pull it all together. Perhaps drapery panel/swag would add a bit of warmth and texture. Don’t even think functional, just go with the idea that it’s art and pick something over the top and asymmetrical. At this point I could offer ideas but use your own imagination and try to think of the space as someone else’s so you can let your imagination go!

What’s missing is a fireplace. If there’s room maybe you could do a faux one, with candles...something like this:

Let's back track a minute. Now that you've been shown red completed rooms, do you like the thought of keeping the red walls? The only issue with the red is that you won't get the contrast with your furniture like all these photos (except one) show. If you keep the red walls then we just have to bring in a lot of other contrast in other pieces to make it interesting.

Then we need to figure out the furniture lay-out ( more photos of the room and room size would be helpful) and then we can shop for a rug.

The room is 12x13ft. The room feels heavy and serious. Let's find a rug. I am searching for an oriental rug, but afraid it is going to make it further heavy and serious rather than relaxed and magical.

I know the Persian rugs can be expensive. Let's say $1500? The more into this room the more I realized that I am a boho girl.

Gold as the accent color. The thrift stores around me are full of "dated" gold brocade drapes that would look fantastic in your room.

Ying, Take a look on Esty at Turkish rugs. They are very reasonable, one of a kind, lots of colors and I've been told the shipping isn't bad. It just takes some time to hunt through them. I just helped a gal on Houzz whose ordinary bedroom we completely transformed and she purchased pieces on Esty from Turkey and was very happy with them. I'll help look when I get a minute.

Boho and magical. So not my wheelhouse, I’m more goth chic with eastern euro wood and accessories. But when I think of your terms I thinks artistic, global, tactile for boho and fire, twinkling light and whimsy.

I'm sorry to hear that you ordered a chair before we got this rug figured out and the furniture layout.

Please haunt your local antique shops....for rugs as well as furniture and accessories. And speak with family members about acquiring cast off, old pieces of furniture and art that they might want to get rid of. I do think that the white contrasting molding is distracting and would paint it out the color of the walls....if you can match the color. I have a Confederate Red study, with Indian Ivory trim, filled with my father’s library chair, recovered in a tapestry fabric. A (faux) oriental rug, a roll top desk....and Books. Books. Books. Books. Reflecting a 35 year career as an historian. So...get busy accumulating some History of your own!

This red room is the most difficult. I regrouped the furniture. I like having different groups in the room. It’s just still “not me”. I want some contrast in color and size. Something “light” to shake it up a little.

you could always tone down the red wall color w/more of a blush color like your chair. the red sofa would still be a beautiful focal point. I like the marble table next to that pink chair too. then bring in a rug w/the deep reds/pinks. maybe an overdyed turkish rug?

Perhaps a HUGE black and white super large scale flower photo. It would lighten up the space while giving a chic boho (floral) vibe. I like Beth H carpet options, they add a fresh feel to the room that is still high end but inviting.

The room looks unfinished because of the bare walls, lack of draperies and small rug. I don't think you need to change anything you have done do far.

What if you put the desk under the window? A desk in front of a window always has great light for reading or writing. Then the chair can face the sofa, with the rug between them. Move the plant to the corner between the desk and the sofa - it seems more natural for a plant to be near the window.

You may not like this idea, but your leather recliner is so very shiny - it doesn't look soft and welcoming. The internet has several ideas for dulling the finish of too-shiny leather e.g. applying a conditioner and not buffing it, light sanding, lemon juice etc.

For pillows, use ones with feather or down filling. The one you have looks like it's sitting very stiffly on the leather recliner. Your pillows should squish invitingly against the contours of the sofa or chair.

Large scale floral wallpaper on wall & floors darkened like in this photo - another option that is a little more whimsical? Would suggest that you get furniture layout right before purchasing a rug.

The white wainscot makes the room look like a dining room. The easiest solution is to paint brown over the white, and glaze the brown to simulate wood grain. To approximate what this might look like, see the photos below:

So many ways to go with this room ( comfy library feel, extending the rich jewel tones , oriental rugs , dramatic, dark wallpaper and wood tones....and as you say, Harry Potter ) , but in the interest of toning down the formality and heaviness, which you are seeking, my suggestions are for a more relaxed , eclectic, lighter feeling room with a bit of contemporary and whimsy thrown in. ( A Harry Potter room will only give you more dark and heavy sot of stodginess. ) I would paint the ceiling white , but you could keep it , and along with the walls - (beautiful color, btw) that already gives you that cozy feel you want. Would paint out the white stripes dividing the ceiling heights though. — I would place your beautiful tufted sofa a foot in front of the window, centered and facing the entrance to the room with the plant next to it by the window. Remove the big , brown ottoman and table desk. Angle your leather chair next to the bookcase on one side wall with a floor lamp next to it and angle your new chair facing sofa on the other side. Love your blush chair, which drove some of the contemporary inspiration items below : a light room size rug with pinks and purple, layered with a fluffy flokati rug, natural woven window shades , a fun, pretty light fixture . Add a white marble or glass coffee table in front of the sofa and some LARGE vertical art on the wall by your new chair to balance out the bookcase on the opposite side.

Ying, I see you have a variety of chairs in your first picture. If you need to have a writing desk in this room, I suggest you get a better , more substantial piece that could be used with one of your lovely wooden chairs at the front right wall by the entrance of the room. To keep the eclectic vibe going , you could combine a more traditional look with more contemporary elements in the room. Or you could look for a contemporary piece and use one of your wooden traditional chairs with it.

I agree with armchairshopper that painting out the white lower portion of the wall can transform that dining room look into more of the rich , dark library look you are wanting.This can also be achieved by using the gloss version of your existing red , or a slightly darker hue of the red you have, or of a similar neighboring color on the color spectrum, in a HIGH GLOSS for the lower wall and all wood trim. The picture below illustrates the variations within one color family ( as opposed to using a contrasting color ). —- It is hard to tell from the photos of your room exactly what kind of red you have there now. On my monitor it looks like more of a cool red , like deep raspberry , mulberry or magenta ???- so taking it more toward the purple/gray/black side of reds.
