You could change from incandescent bulbs, which get hot when shining, to LED equivalents, which do not. This seems like something that might be more about that than about air escape, although if the correct kind of cans were used, there should be insulation above them anyway.

Do NOT add insulation around recessed lighting cans! If they weren't designed for it, they need specific clearances maintained.

If it's a matter of air leaking through, you should consider having them replaced.

If it's just a matter of heat from the bulbs warming the roof, then it's not a big deal. That heat has to go some place (it goes up). Switching to LED bulbs will use a lot less electricity and create less heat, but it will still go up.

Bottom line: if you're losing heated room air through the fixtures, deal with that. If it's just bulb warmth, let it be.

And, no. instant pendants will do nothing.

Thanks, its not the lights on, its the air escaping through the can. We don't even use them very often but the snow melts over each hole. I thought the instant pendants with their wide base at the very least would cover some of that hole up which I still think they would. The pendants are safe and made for recess lighting and have a wide base that goes over the entire recess opening.

Yes a canopy (ceiling disk part) would help, but add NO supplemental insulation.

IMO there is something seriously wrong with the insualtion in your home if this happens. As for instant pendants that will change nothing and there are pot lights that are meant to go into insulated ceilings and LEDs are IMO the only lighting that should be used now.
