Of course, I'm in a city and the post office doesn't know it's been delivered till end of day (it doesn't seem like they have a device to say it's here electronically)? But still very very handy to know it is coming today.

I say this to contrast with Fedex, in which case even when I'm home, the thing that usually alerts me is the text message 'Your package has been delivered.' It usually arrives within 5 minutes of delivery.

So far, I have found that though it alerts for regular mail, as well, it doesn't tell you when that kind of mail has been put in the box. With a package, my alert comes right after I've seen the mailman pull out of our neighborhood. Since I don't always see when the mailman comes, that is very helpful indeed. I wish, though, since they do scan some of the regular mail, that they'd provide an alert for when it's been put in the box, too. They have a place to give feedback on their site and I submitted that observation but hey, it sure is nice to know there's a package coming, and when it's been put in the box. A nice change. Some of our TV news stations are cautioning that there is a need to get registered for your address so that thieves don't do it first but would seem to me that if it was discovered a mail thief had registered your address, that would be a trail right to the thief. Tampering with the US mail is still a Federal crime, isn't it?

Yes, I've advised a friend in a high risk area to sign up (but I'm sure he hasn't).

Well, some people just won't take advice. All that can be done is to give it just in case they will and hope for the best.
