"IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN"

I have a bedroom I call "THE BOYS' ROOM" because that's the room our teenage grandsons use when they spend the night. I painted it green a while back because its one of their favorite colors so I really don't want to change the color. I have just purchased a new queen mattress set and brown leather platform bed and would like to locate the bed on the wall opposite the entry door so that the bed is the first thing you see when you enter the room. The problem is that there is a window on that wall which is not completely centered. I'm considering the bedding shown in the picture but would like suggestions and ideas of how I can make this arrangement work and look GREAT!

I'm excited to be "getting" ideas instead of "giving" them!

    I like how it looks now. Even with the window not being centered, you have lamps on either side which add balance to it.

      Here is a sketch of the room. I have tried the bed on the long wall but it just doesn't look good to see the side of the bed when you enter the room.

      I do want to keep the tripod lamp but the bookcase and lamp on the other side are just things I already had. I guess I'm looking for something with a little "punch" or "wow" ???

      The room looks great! Even while the window isn't centered, the night stand and floor lamp create some balance and symmetry. Love the bedding with the wall color.

      You could try pulling the color from the trim into broad (I'm thinking about a foot wide) stripes framing the windows...leave about a foot of the green on each side of the window, and then run a band of cream from floor to ceiling. It would emphasize the wabi-sabiness of the window rather than trying to mask it.

      Thanks Nicole. So you don't think it looks choppy to have the bed in front of the window? Any ideas on how to add the "WOW" to the room?

      I like the bedding! I like the color. It looks good. You could consider adding curtains behind the bed flanking the window that can be used to make it "LOOK" centered, if that really bothers you. Attached some from quick search.

      definitely does not look choppy! what is to the right of the night stand? if the bed was rotated 90 degrees facing the closet would there be space to open the door to the bedroom?

      Kristen I REALLY like that idea and it would add interest! Just wondering if I should incorporate a brown stripe too ......tying in the brown from the bedding?

      Frederick, I love those drapery options and that is one way that I could add balance. Are those draperies available in ready-made panels?

      I agree with Frederick Sterling Interiors. A window does not have to be centered with any furinture or design, it just has to flow with the rest of the room. By putting draperies behind the whole bed, covering the window, and taking the drapery up to the ceiling would create a more open (making the ceiling appear taller) yet cozy look.

      Nicole, the bed is currently facing the closet and if I rotate it 90 degrees against the long blank wall it seems to cut off the entrance to the room and you see the side of the bed as you enter.

      I was thinking of trying to find some old large metal lettering to go on the long blank wall or possibly hang guitars along the wall since one grandson is into playing???

      Keitha, have you considered a window covering other than shutters such as roman blinds (or similar) which could act as a faux headboard or shutter doors(or the like) which you could lean on the wall behind the bed.

      Drapery, I agree with you and Frederick but I do have a "thing" about symmetry!..... I guess I need to get over it!!! Kristen's stripe idea could work too!

      Unfortunately, two of the draperies were found on the following site, which is in England. Shipping might me a nightmare. But do a Bing search on "Green and Brown curtains" and see if there are any other sites. What is on the long blank wall in the room?

      Anne, I have a brown leather headboard and just haven't installed it yet. Shutters are great but they can also be a curse! I have them throughout my house so if I remove them from this window it would be the only window at the front of the house without shutters and I just don't think that would look very good. So, I feel like I have to work with them.

      Thanks Frederick I will take a look. I don't want to go to the expense of custom draperies for that room. Right now there is nothing on the long wall but will definitely need something there!

      Anne, I actually thought of putting brown shutters on both sides of the window but wasn't sure how it might look next to the plantation shutters.

      For balance, that blank wall opposite the bed needs something long--maybe a long dresser/cabinet, lamp, mirror above and a chair. Good start, though!

      Frederick, you are right I definitely need something long on that wall. I really don't need the storage so thats why I was thinking of some neat old metal letters or large sepia canvas pictures of my grandsons for that space. I saw this pic. Somewhere and really liked the letters?

      I love the letters! I bought a large vintage one for my son's apartment. I, however, think the room will be "heavy" on the bed side if you don't balance it with furniture on the other. Not sure if you care for IKEA furniture---and I only mention because it is inexpensive for a spare room. Perhaps adding the attached bookshelf laying on the long side (they sell casters to go on it too which might look cool for teenage boys) would give some balance without breaking the bank and adding heavy dresser/chest. You can add a lamp, or the lighted letters on or above and books/knick knacks/baskets in bookshelf.

      That would be a very good idea and I think it would look good. I'm about 4 hrs from Atlanta Ikea sooooo...good excuse for a Road Trip!! Now I've got to locate those letters.... Maybe the Atlanta flea market?

      Restoration Hardware's Baby and Child site has marquee lights like that. Rejuvenation has lower-case ones on their site as well.
