ADVICE - Random wall deco ideas

I have this random wall that looks completely naked when I don't put anything there. I'm looking to get rid of what is already on there, because the kitchen is very small and even the depth of that table is obstructing our path.
I'm looking to put/make something on the wall that is decorative, but that is mostly flat, to not take up any space. Help?

I would leave the star and remove everything else.

How is that stair up to code without a railing?!

I'd remove the wall art and just put a tall lamp/vase on that side of the table to fill the space.

    what kind of art?

I think you would miss the drop off spot if you removed the table. I'm suggesting a half round table instead that will curve into the wall not stick out into the room at the corner. Ideally you could look for one that's depth isn't much wider than the stair that curves into the room Other suggestion is a mirror with or without the table.

Lots of different styles available. Found these with a houzz photo search.

Have you thought of painting that wall? Might look less "naked". Depends on the whole room, of course. If you don't need a table there and wall art could get knocked off, I'd look into paint, wallpaper or murals.

    tartan, makes sense. thanks!

How about a narrow chunky wood shelf on which you could place a slender vase or prop a black and white photo.... minimalist but rustic.

What kind of art? Something you like - a painting, a print, a mural, a textile, whatever. Find something that appeals to you and literally fits in the space. Ditch the table. It's in the way and not doing anything for you anyway. Hang something on the wall that makes you happy every time you look at it.

I think I might consider a hand stitched quilt in a 100 year old house (if that's your style, of course). You could pin it (or baste it) so that it fits within the framework of the space, while leaving a six inch or so white "border"...

Where to find art? Talk to your local artist or go to your local art gallery. If you don't find anything there, try art.com. I got two bird prints for my powder room and I love them.

Nixing the table is a smart idea. The color of the wood and shape of stairs are beautiful on there own; I'd like the wall naked. If you are hell bent on hanging art, can you show pics of the rest of the room so we can make suggestions that would look good with the rest of the space and with your style?

If you are into vintage, I could imagine a gallery of very small vintage items hung on that small wall: different sized tiny mirrors with wood and gold frames, different vintage postcards mounted and framed, a wall of tiny silverware spoons. All of the times would have to be pretty small to get five or six of them on there.

I agree with a prior poster that paint will afford the thinnest change. For some reason I can visualize a very nice green.... valspar plum passion. It changes with the light.

Some ideas, especially if you have a smaller painting or print, effective
  • 7 years ago

Art? Is it an illusion that the star is about belly high?? No art. I prefer it naked and think you may too if you gave yourself time to adjust. The shelf was a good idea, but feels more random (and too low) than a slim console table. If you leave the console, max a small lamp and framed photo.

you could prob recess that area under the stairs, no? If you wanted to, you could do some recessed shelving or cubby holes (somewhat like shown here)

    wine fridge/storage? lol

extra storage if yours is as hollow as this one. notice the simple handrail.

I like the idea of painting it. maybe a deep navy blue

doing some wood art or your star over the blue would look nice

i also love black next to that wood. (and you could install a simple black handrail (look at the right pic to see how the risers in black would look. No numbers though!

I like the recess idea Beth. That last pic, looks like a bench treated as a table with art hung at nose level. Don't do that, OP. A slim bench maybe but not decorated. Something the depth of the first step won't be noticed for the space it takes up.

I guarantee the people who lived there 100 years ago left it bare. For interest though, you might just paint the entire "column" holding up the stairs in your personal favorite happy color. This is over the top color blocking, but to show the idea of wood stairs with fun color.

IMO a bench would be best. I like these two concepts with a round mirror hung above
