You need lamps and tables....How about moving your chairs apart and putting a table with a lamp on it. Then put a table where the couch and loveseat meet with a lamp on it. Are these reclining couches? Coffee table won't work then but maybe with a pretty throw over one or both of the couches, a sofa pillow on each of them, your room will look less formal and comfy. What is behind you when you are taking this picture? Could one of your chair be put there, facing the window with the other one where it is now? Curtains will soften the look of your room....maybe sheers or grommet drapes to pull to the side easily and some artwork.

can you paint? that yellow is just way too much w/the burgundy.

find a larger sized warmer wood coffee table for the center of the rug

A better arrangement would be a good start. Put the largest sofa aginst the far wall (where the two chairs are now). Then the love seat can go on the wall with the windows in a L with the sofa. Then I would play with the placement of the two chairs try splitting them up and angeling them so they are not another huge chunk together, side by side. Then soften them up with some LIGHT color throw pillows.

I would look for a lighter color rug, the current one is too dark with all that dark furniture and think about adding some light glass top tables for a center and end tables.

A round center table would break up the square bulk of the sofa set and tie the pieces together. Perhaps something like this:

Beth's paint suggestion is great! A ligth Grey would go nice with the dark color of the sofas.

Yes, move furniture as Jamie suggested and give us new look please. Definitely separate chairs , so it does not look as one more bulky sofa.

Hi everyone !!! @beverly, @jamie , @beth, @erin and @celerygirl !!!!

Thank you all for your brilliant suggestions. I will share this with my mum and hope she listens to me.

i will update you all on the final decision.

Stay blessed !!!!

Post some photos if she changes things. We would love to see where she goes with this.

It looks like you have a good layout plan already. We think bringing in the blue (in the rug) more will really help. Try adding some blue pillows, artwork, and perhaps some table lamps once you have some end tables. We like the idea of a round coffee table as well.

Have you considered putting mom in a home?

The windows need to have something to control the light flow. You might consider a rollup shade depending on the color you choose if mum will go for new paint job. If not, roll her up in the carpet and take her on a ride to her sister's home on the other side of the country. :)

Return it. And in the future, don't buy sofas "by the set".

Anglo, it's not hers, it's her mother's. And apparently mother likes it.
