I would get the best R-value you can. Does the building dept require a cetrain exterior R-value the entire exterior package?

R 10 is pretty darn good for a garage door. I would want to know what your garage walls were to see what makes sense. What is the R value for your house walls? What did you do on the floor above garage?

What are your goals? Environmental? Garage comfort? Financial?

Is your average winter temp 20? That would be a high of 30 and a low of 10 - or thereabouts?

For any insulation question, the answer is usually the best you can afford. With a bedroom above the garage you might compromise on insulation for a more quiet opener.

We went with R-18 doors (16' and 10') but they face west so they shield us from the hot afternoon sun in the summer and the cold winds in the winter.

I'm not sure you're going to see much difference in the temperature of the garage or the living space above it by going with the more expensive garage door. I think you'll get more benefit if you invest the difference in better air sealing and better insulation of the garage ceiling (floor of bedroom above.)
