Thank you NHBabs! I just looked up that chokeberry and it looks exactly like the bush we saw.

White spring flowers, fruit (but it might get more with cross-pollination with a second plant, but I am not sure), and typically lovely autumn color.

If in fact an Aronia probably A. x prunifolia - many cultivated forms belong to this intermediate hybrid rather than the true, pure black or red choke-berry species. For instance 'Autumn Magic', 'Viking' and 'Brilliant' ('Brilliantissima') have all been noted as being of hybrid origin despite being routinely offered as pure species selections. And the coloring of the fruits shown here looks like it could perhaps be considered intermediate.

Ritchie - I have Aronia Brilliantissima outside my window and young robins tried some berries yesterday. It suckers, but is a good, tall shrub. Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima'

Notice in the last picture how bright red the fruits are, unlike those of the shrub asked about here. This redness is thought to be the basis for naming the selection 'Brilliant' (the much used 'Brilliantissima' is apparently incorrect). Otherwise 'Brilliant' is nevertheless believed to be of hybrid origin, as in Aronia x prunifolia 'Brilliant'. In addition there seems to be a history of seed-raised material having been sold, so that the name has been applied by now to a large number of different forms in nurseries.
