On a scale of 1-5 with 1 being no activity and 5 being very active I would say 1.5 to 2 lol.

I have never tried putting callas extra deep in a cold zone. I just dug them up and stored them.

I had some freeze at 3-4 inches deep in zone 4a once. If you like trying new things, I would try to find out if some varieties are hardier than others and/or plant those (or else some inexpensive ones) about 6 inches down and mulch them well. I have taken those foam (fake stone looking) pots and put them upside down to try and get extra protection of bulbs etc. You just have to remember to take them back off in the spring lol.

It certainly isn't the most active of forums, especially since the change from GW to Houzz. I think with the disruption lots of people went to other sites like FB. I try to boost the activity by posting new threads but don't always get a response. Some threads I can't respond to myself, such as Callas which won't grow in my climate.

I wish GW had more activity..I'm new to aroids and have a lot to learn..I appreciate the advice that I've received here..I've wondered if there's less interest in gardening as time goes on..so less activity on the forums..

When GW switched to Houzz I found another site that I love, it's very active. I don't stop here as often as I did before the switch.

you might want to search this forum or bulb or your region forum or the whole gardenweb for old calla posts. I remember seeing many. there is a wealth of info there, if you take your time to read thru the posts. people post again and again about their specific problem not realizing that it might be a very common problem and been addressed many times before.

I've been posting for many years. After awhile of seeing same questions time and again I got kinda bored ;). After all it does take time and patience.

occasionally when there are a few people posting together the activity picks up, but in winter it gets very slow.

it used to be much more active a few years back.

Petrushka, I too have been posting on these gardening forums for many years. I have searched this topic several times, in aroids, bulbs and New England gardening, to name a few. I've never found this topic. I haven't searched in a while so I thought I'd post using different key words. That way, maybe someone might see my post and have some answers.

i'll see what I have in my notes on callas. I have them in pots on my balcony. I am in apt, but I often save info for the future :).

there is a forum here called tropicalesque gardens. ask there - most people are pushing the zone limits there and at least can give you some more ideas.

The Tropicalesque Forum has never been very active. Like most forums, it is most active in spring and early summer.

I belong to garden.org as well as some other sites. Some on a different sign on name.

Hopefully the aroid and tropical forums will become more active again. There seems to be a revival of sorts, of people growing houseplants, especially philodendrons, monstera, and alocasia etc. People seem to be willing to pay insane prices for Pink Princess Philo and variegated Monstera now on ebay and other places. Before the economy collapse etc. a lot of plants were selling on ebay for big $$$ but then it stopped for awhile. Now I am seeing the higher prices again.

I noticed some newer and even (older harder to find) colocasia and alocasias on the agristarts tissue culture type sites so they will probably trickle down and show up this spring with cheaper/more reasonably priced ebay sellers like wellspring etc. if one is good at starting smaller plants.
