The ol’ area rug dilemna question

last modified: 7 years ago

So I just bought a sectional sofa and I’m trying to figure out how an area rug is supposed to be placed. It’s an L shape sectional and both sides are open and only the back is against a wall (See pics). Should the rug extend past the sectional like I currently have it or should it just sit under the sectional but not extend past the sides? Thank you in advance!

If you want more of your rug to show, consider replacing the ottoman with a glass coffee table or one up on legs. Ditto with any side tables youplan to add so you balance out the bulk and darkness of the sofa with something airier.

To connect the sofa, wall color, and rug to your art work, look for throws and pillows in the red and tan colors of your walls and rug.

I would say the placement is perfect but the rug is kind of a non issue it blends into the floor I would think one with a bit more color would be better

829 (I'm sure you're more than a number) the comments about colour are good, but of course we can't see the rest of the room. I wish I could play with your images but Houzz has decreed I can no longer copy pics so I can't. Look at your room as a whole. From what we can see you have a wonderful start. I think the black overkill comes from the ottoman. Consider an alternative there. A table would allow you to place something like a bowl in one of the colours from that lovely piece above the sectional. I'd use the gold. Add a side table to the left, perhaps in bronze? This is a quick grab from Houzz which could work (a clear glass lamp would look good on it):

Houzz has also decreed I can't comment after posting a picture. Ah, isn't life lovely?

Never mind. I'm thinking if we view the room as a whole, there's no problem with using more black on the other side of the room, you just have to mix it up a bit. Consider grey cushions for the sectional. Maybe a touch of red on the other side of the room. Play with metallics. Get some complexity and depth into the whole thing.

We think the placement is perfect, but what about adding some red to the rest of the space since there is red in the artwork? Perhaps some red pillows? Why not even get an end table and try a red lamp on it? Pops of color will definitely help here.

Thank you all. What I should have mentioned is that this is the old rug I was using for a different sofa. I do plan on getting a colorful rug to give the room a little pop. Thus, why I was asking about the size of rug before I ordered a new one. Thanks again! This community rocks!!!

That's great that a new rug is coming. Pick colors that work with your art work if that is staying. Then get interesting pillows in those colors as well. Do keep in mind your floor color when you choose a rug. Good luck!
