Hostas under Hollies

I have an area landscaped with clipped Burford’s hollies; the area between these hollies and the house is partially shady, with ready access to water— I am thinking of starting a small hosta collection here, planting trios of a few different large-medium sized varieties. My only concern is root competition: I know the hollies are very vigorous, and they sucker sometimes— I fear that their questing roots may out-compete the hapless hostas. It’d be a shame to have stunted hostas, or blank, boring expanses of hosta-less mulch. Does anybody have experience with hostas and hollies (or a similar situation involving potential root competition)? Also, any tips on initial soil improvement and any varieties you’d recommend?
