The seeds in the upper right look like they are covered in spikes upon closeup.

Very difficult to id seeds. Top left could be Calendula. Centre could be Coriander. Bottom right could be Tagetes. Do you have any idea what was in the packet? If you have some names we could perhaps match them up with the pictures.

I agree with floral on bottom right being consistent with Tagetes/marigold.

California gardening Jay? did you expect insight about CA natives? Huh? Who would give a mixed seed packet, it's evil, probably with plants with different growing needs...ick.

Which means I guess you did the most sensible thing, sort them out.

Top left is calendula, bottom left is zinnia, bottom right is marigold.

You could confirm my Coriander suggestion by crushing a seed and sniffing.

Ken, I put a quarter in for scale.Floral, I was wondering about the curly-q seeds. I think you have it. I haven't grown pot marigolds in years, but I still slightly remember the seeds. I think you have the coriander right also. The seeds are with my spices, a perfect match, but not something I'd expect in a mix. I've been looking at all kinds of asteraceae seeds and didn't see any that looked like the seeds you are all saying look like marigolds. That sounds about right. I'm not into marigolds. I'd still like to know what the long dark seeds are, and the arrow shaped larger Asteraceae seeds, and also the little round seeds that have spikes when you blow them up. There were no species listed for the seeds. I would rather seperate the seeds and grow them seperately. Then I can arrange them to my liking. The mix also contains what looks like millet, so if it was just scattered it could be tangled and messy.

Debarron, where did you get California. I don't know where they're from. Seedville USA. Nothing great so far. Coriander, Calendula, and marigolds. I was planning on growing coriander anyway, and the only Tagetes I'd be interested in is Mexican tarragon, T. lucida. I never was looking to grow California natives. I won't even grow their milkweeds, though they are tempting. My tropicals are all treated like annuals, with cuttings for perpetuity.

Thanks Susan, that looks about right. I am growing Zinnias for the butterflies so the more seeds, the merrier. I don't know how in the world I crossposted to California gardening! :) That's my brain after a sleepless night. I'm still curious about the long dark seeds,(middle right). They sort of look like giant Sweet Cicely seeds, something in Apiaceae, but what would be that large? And the little mace balls? What's up with those. I miss those prizes in the cereals and cracker jacks. It's super hard to even find cracker jacks any more. If I don't get an i.d. on the remaining ones I'll winter sow them and post them when they grow. I think I've stayed on course with all my winter sowing, but if things did go bad you will all love me here. For a good while! :) Floral, so funny! You are such a master at stateing the obvious. I see the coriander seeds every day in the jar. The spices are by my morning raisin breads and goodies. Talk about a mental freeze!

I don't know if it will help, but I zoomed in on the 2 noid.

These are small, between 1/16" and 1/8" long. I thought if they stuck to cloths, that might help, so I tested them on 3 different fabrics, and they wouldn't stay attached to any of them. You know how a lot of plants get their common names because of their seeds sticking to clothing, hair, and fur. Oh yeah, they wouldn't stick in my hair either lol! .....maybe my beard???

These are 3/4" long.

Last one possibly Cosmos? It can be time consuming but there are a few seed ID sites that have to be gone through but not bad for a bit of winter. Even better are seedling ID sites...LOL.

Thank you MissMyGardens.!Thanks for the links. I had no idea such sites existed. I'm not sure if they are Cosmos seeds. They seem maybe too big. I have real Cosmos seeds to compare them with.

Actually, I had no idea you were cooking. Which of the sites is time consuming? Do you ever use them? It's not often we end up with unidentifiable seeds. :)

I tried to delete this post, but I'm finding houzz won't allow me to edit or delete my own threads. I have 2 seeds that I'm still not sure about. It's not a big deal or significant when sowing so many species of seeds. I was just going to sow those 2 kinds of seeds, and come back for an id later.

why would you want to delete the post.. its one of the most entertaining of the last few holidays weeks ...

why not start some other posts with seed from your collections ... those of which you might already have the ID .... some of us .... are very bored when its 20 odd degrees outside .. and want to think about warmer days in the garden ...
