Rug over carpet , color palette for master bedroom

last modified: 7 years ago

Here is the picture of our master bedroom. Right now we have the bed, and the dresser with art on top. The rest of the room is empty. I want to put two chairs sonewhere In the room. Either where they already are, shown in the pic. Or in place of the dresser, or right in froby of the fireplace facing each other.

The design dilemma is the wall-to-wall carpet which we will not be replacing. It is golden brown with a square pattern on top in BrOwn. I want to put a rug in there, but I want a navy and fuschia color schemE in accents. My questions are :

1. While keeping the carpet, can I even do this color scheme? I m not v fond of the pattern or the color of carpet but it’s very high quality woolen carpet so I don’t want to replace it.

2. this is what I have thought of in color scheme. Neutral beige or grey chairs with fuschia cushions. A geometric pink/ brown rug in between them , and an ottoman on it. Navy blue lamps on Nightstands. Thoughts?

3. Would a gold Sputnik chandelier look good?

4. Any good stores ( online or physical) For shopping for rugs? It seems there are sooo many options online, can’t make up my mind which one will look good. Biggest dilemma is what will look good on already existing patterned carpet.

Can't recommend going toward pink brown in your new rug, given the golden/brown background of your wall to wall. So now what? LOL

Unless you’re painting and changing the carpet - which you said you’re not doing - I don’t see any way to add fuchsia and navy with what you currently have. You’re going to have to come up with a different plan.

I'd go heavier on the navy and just a smidge on the fuchsia.

    will you be painting?

Ahh.... ok ... I guess navy and fuschia is out with the current carpet and gold paint color.

How about if I go with purple/amethyst /mauve palette? I m thinking it would go with the existing brown headboard and dawn colored carpet ?

That way I can keep the headboard, wall color and carpet . Major expense not incurred! And I can have amethyst /mauve bedding and nightstand lamps, beige chairs with mauve cushions, and mauve area rug.

Ahh...ok tells me you are not understanding color basics. Spend some time researching color combos...what works, what doesn't work and WHY. It really IS a science that most people don't take the time to understand or simply don't have the patience to learn. Understanding why gives one a leg up on making good choices.

I don’t have confidence in my own color sense however I began working with a reputable designer who gave the above suggestions of the pink and navy color scheme and how to incorporate it into the room without changing the paint and the carpet.

She is off for the season now so I ll get back to her later. However now I m just rethinking my whole color choice .

by looking at pictures on houzz, Pinterest etc I think the safer option would be shades of purple with existing bedroom .

Thankyou for your advice about color science. I ll try to look it up !

So I did a quick look up and as always it’s a bit confusing ... so many rules yet so many spaces that defy those rules and still look gorgeous..

also I don’t understand the rule of 3. How does this apply in this picture? I can see yellow white black green brown.

Start with the fact that you do not need an area rug atop wall to wall carpeting.

Take a real photo, with YOUR bed and YOUR dresser, and close up photo of the carpet you won't replace, the fireplace too, and tell us what is the rest of the carpet /flooring/tile in the home as well.

When you get all that done? Come back, and do NOT start a new post. : )

PS...when loading a photo, wait until you see it clearly...THEN hit the green submit button.

Lolll.. sure I ll do that .. currently on a night shift but will do as soon as I get back home tomorrow! Thanks!

honestly, your carpet, if that's yours in the photo. is pretty cool. don't fight with it...
what's up with the non-serene colors you keep talking about? a bedroom should be restful, calm, quiet... imo

I don't know what you see in a photo but the Rule of 3 is thusly: The equation says that when choosing colors for a room, you should select:

    • a main color for the space that makes up 60%
    • a secondary color that makes up 30%
    • and an accent color that makes up 10%

I have seen this carpet , I believe this is the best /accurate pic. Please stop fighting it?

Re think your palette!!!! You are jamming a square peg in a round hole. Your best result is to go with the thing you don't want to change, or change the THING to get something else. Forcing........is what you have. jmho. Lose the dark band of trim crown , get a softer paler paint, or even a grass cloth paper. Ditch the over wrought window dressing for a clean and crisp linen roman shade, in white. Or an Allustra Hunter Douglas , similar. Pick up the chocolate "dot" in a wonderful "mink" throw....

Let it be fabulous, by letting it be what it wants to be.

It looks like you have wallpaper and I realize how hard it is to remove. I believe the walls don't work with the rug either and doing the walls would change the entire look. If it were me, I'd wait on moving forward until the walls were tackled.

It is not "Hard" To remove wallpaper. Most experienced painters can successfully remove every inch and take care of that in a day or two to include prep for paint.

It’s not wallpaper, it’s venetian plaster, so it’s not that hard to paint over it.

Agree regarding wall covering, as it is reflecting the gold onto the carpet. Peel back a piece of it, maybe behind a door or at the baseboard just to see what comes up. If its strippable then you can do that part yourself. It looks to be a wall covering rather than a wallpaper but can't be sure of it from my monitor. I mention this because many of the faux finish wall coverings (not paper) had a woven backing that stripped very easily. Let me know what you find.

Sorry maliha, I was typing as you were telling us about Venetian plaster. That's very good news as that is a lot easier to deal with. A good painter would tell you if it's waxed, unwaxed, etc. to determine how to prepare the walls for painting. Do you think this is something you would want to do....change the wall color and/or texture?

I think the carpeting as is, in combo with a different paint tone and trim, can make you love a softer tonal palette in the space. : ) Delightfully sophisticated, restful, even just plain sexy.

So the bottom line is .. there Is no room for a pop of color in this room.

Let me rethink all of this... because i dont like browns and beiges unless they are done amazingly well.. and that I can’t do myself .. and for that to happen I would have to hire the most top notch designer that I can’t afford ...

i ll focus on this room a little later..

Omg!! I just now saw all the downloaded pics.. they r awesome!! The art and the chair in plum .. this could give the room a wow factor! I want to start working on it right away ! Where are these from ?

What paint color should I choose ?

thanks very much! all of it looks very royal.

The price point is ok. I am wondering if i can get by with less expensive items that look similar. I am ok with paying if the thing stands out and is worth it but i read reviews of horchow and people were complaining they dont get what they pay for...nowadays its hard to tell if the price is what it should be or just inflated, esp if its online.

what do you think of zgallerie or westelm for art?

also , would it be ok if towards one side of fireplace is mirror and the other has art?

    ?

Are you referring to my last question about wall art and mirror on each side of fireplace ? I mean for symmetry in the room would it be ok?

Mahla--- I also thought Jan's suggestions were amazing. Now looking at the price, I know that I could not swing those. Just randomly I went to wayfair and put in purple accent chair ( I am guessing you could put in more parameters) and just for example these come up. I would think you could find something that might work really nicely as well- probably not as perfect as the original suggestion but hey- for hundreds (maybe a thousand) less, it would work for me. :) No disrespect meant to anyone.

    link to purple chairs

thankyou for your suggestions .. that’s exactly what I was thinking .. can I go with a cheaper chair .. lollll.. actually my neighbor who also recently bought and moved into her house is doing her interior, and she is mixing and matching expensive and inexpensive items. Like she got her sectional from Ethan Allen custom made , but the accent chairs are for $200 from athome! Seriously the fabric etc matched so well I couldn’t tell the difference !

Similarly she bought her kitchen round 8 seater dinette in vintage white from Ethan Allen but the chairs to go with it are $100 some a piece from overstock. I didn’t pay attention first until she mentioned and my sister in laws and my jaw dropped because we couldn’t tell it wasn’t part of the set!

However having said that, maybe a designer/connoisseur would know!

I mean of course most of the times we can tell cheap stuff from expensive but my friend says to cleverly buy and place stuff to make them look expensive., .. a designer I started Working with Warned me that any chair less than $250 is bound to be cheaply made and will break , legs coming off, get ruined etc .

but I also know that sometimes the quality is nearly the same it’s just the brand name that’s collecting the money. If only I knew how to differentiate that would make it easier ....now I m compelled to stay away from cheaper just to be on the safe side ... a designer I interviewed earlier but he was out of my budget told me he buys stuff from websites like Wayfair, joss and main etc but carefully, and You have to know which items can be bought cheaper but will give expensive look.

You are worried about the periphery and the first issues are bedding/ window treatment and painting walls. .

The mirror? Not where it is! PAINT it in a gild finish, and put it over the dresser. Modern Masters has several tones, one below in semi opaque and opaque

Just remember................. the less expensive you go , the more work you will do. : ) Time and money? There is always a correlation.

Yes most definitely you have to read the reviews. I agree for chairs you cannot know comfort but if it's to be just a decorative piece (and not like in your family room and used daily for hours) then it's probably ok.

That said though, the really lovely one - bouck wingback that is really cool looking and under$200, there are reviews that say it's not very durable. But still, most people were pleased. Pick and choose what you see and what makes sense for you.

Yes true... expensive is the safer route! i want to take a middle road though.. i m going to call the paint company who have been doing paints in this house for the previous owners .... they did the Venetian plaster so they would know ...they r also not the regular painters but high end :/ expensive ones .. but I will call them anyway to see what they can do about the paint.

The window treatment I have looked into and it runs in thousands ... I seriously want to stay away from spending thousands on some plainish window treatment .. i would be happier if I could get away with keeping the curtains and spending the same money on a nice buffet for my dining or an expensive crystal chandelier ..

what do you think is there any way I could keep them ? Or maybe go with a cheaper jcpenney type option?

The window treatment has to go. You are trying to make a star of every element in the room. You can't. Your best bet is to get a local designer. That window needs a simple roman shade, It doesn't need panels, or all the glop on it now. Some things need to be "plainish" . Too much drama is.............................................. BIG boo HOO..

No no I dont mean I want anything fancy for the windows .. I hate this style myself .. just trying to save the budget ..

Even simple Roman shades at eddiez or shade store will cost me several k .

Call a Hunter Douglas showroom near you. The window? No Can't stay. Call a Lowes for a simple plantation shutter measure. That is not a SEVERAL K. window.

Simplify.......and the bed and the window are the elephants in the room. Not one thing will seem right until THEY are right.

Get some ON SITE design help, with the entire room. It will be the best money you spend. For all we know, there are better ways to arrange it. No drawing and no dimensions make that impossible to know. : ) Your eyes are closed when you sleep. No LAW states the bed must face the fire. But minus dimensions we can't hazard a guess.

thats A lot of info .. I ll try to work on it this weekend .. the Designer that I began working with did not suggest changing the bed placement .. so it never occurred to me there was any other option ... because one wall has the fireplace. the other has closets. The only two available walls are where the dresser is , but one, thats right opposite the entrance which I don’t like, and then the end tables are fixed to the wall... my husband loves them because they are solid wood, not like engineered wood or mdf or veneers that you get today. ...

though I m sure they can be remounted to another wall if need be.

Thankyou for food for thought .
