Bad tile job, what do I do?

We just had a master bath built, and I’m so disappointed with the tile. I feel like this is poor workmanship. When I brought it up, I was told "those tiles are just really hard to work with”. Basically, it is what it is. I feel if the contractor wasn’t comfortable in his ability to lay this kind of tile, he should have been forthcoming. I feel like this should be fixed, is that unreasonable? The layout wasn’t planned out so the lines and joints aren’t consistant, the grout lines are uneven, the transitions are messy, the floor tile is uneven and there are broken/cut (attempted fabrication) in the middle of the floor. There’s no reason for that, right? Shouldn’t they be layered from one side to the other? Can I argue that this is poor workmanship and not a difficult design?

I agrree it is a gut and redo. It is a terrible job. Please, if you havent paid him yet, dont. I also wonder what is under that tile for waterproofing, since he did such a terrible job installing the tile itself. When you redo, please, also pick a lighter colored grout. That black grout is awful. So sorry you have to spend the holidays worrying about all this.

And why is the subway tile all different lengths and offsets?

They moved here recently. So they’re licensed in another state, and working on the state license here. Everything was great up until this point, but this tile job is so disappointing. I feel bad asking them to gut it and redo it, but I don’t think it’s fair that I pay market rates for a shoddy tile job. Would you have the same person redo it, or hire someone else?

Hire an actual TILE contractor. With local references that you can check out.

I would have them do the tear out, but, would hire someone that knows how to waterproof and lay tile redo it. They are in way over their heads on this job. You not only have different sized tile put in here and there, but, you also have tile seams lining up with each other. Its pretty obvious, that they have never done this before.

That isn't the work of a licensed tile contractor.

Do not have the same guy redo it. He's obviously incompetent. So sorry you ended up with this mess. I also agree that you need a much lighter grout color.

What do you think are "market rates" for a bath redo? For the tile portion?

Yikes, I’m sorry. Get someone new.

It's a horrible job - rip it out. Also, the high contrast - white tile and black grout are going to show every little imperfection.

What did you end up doing? I’m having the same issue with my contractor. Bad backsplash job
