I think I would invest in a large area rug as a way of softening the area.

Live in the place for a while to see if it really needs painting (assuming landlord permits). But a large neutral rug would be my first quick fix suggestion to you.

Nice warm furnishing colours! I can understand the apprehension with orange floors.

I would paint the walls a light to medium gray. Dilute the wall color 75% and paint the ceiling.

When you are working around an existing color, it is a huge help to have a color theme to work with. I created an app called Color911. ( you can find out more about it at Color911.com) There are many features but one of the features that I think would be a huge help to you is to find a color theme within the app that has the color of your floor in it. Each theme is comprised of many colors that go beautifully together. Use the theme for choosing colors for everything from wall color to furniture color to accent colors to rugs... you name it! You can use as few or as many colors from each theme as you like and it makes shopping for your new place a lot more fun! There are many themes to choose from and each one is very different than the next. I attached a color theme to give you an idea of what the themes look like. This is a screen shot of one of them. You can certainly go on the Color911 app and find many other themes to choose from. If you choose a color for the walls.. simply take the app to the paint store and they will match it. I have done it several times. So here is just one theme to look at, I hope you can find a theme that inspires you, certainly an orange floor can be a great feature but you would definitely have to work with it! I hope this theme inspires you!

We will for sure need to get an area rug but the flooring runs throughout the hallways as well so if we paint the living room wall, we'll need to carry that color throughout the hallways and there isn't an area rug that we can use in the hallways. Thank you for all the great suggestions!! I think we'll take some color swatches from what you all suggested and try them out in the house and see what fits. The color on the walls now is very faded so something needs to be done. Thanks again!
