No, I would not use navy, or any other dark colored carpet, on stairs. I would not use carpet at all. I would carry the same flooring you have onto the stairs. Then I would stain the honey oak railings a dark espresso. You need to remove that large mirror over your couch and replace it with artwork, And you need a larger coffee table.

I agree with Snaggy! I had navy blue broadloom once (don't know what I was thinking!) and it showed absolutley everything on it - every stray thread, piece of fluff etc

Lots of light? Forget all about blue. Blue, is the least stable dye on earth. It will fade to a hideous greenish blue in short order.........showing every speck of sock lint and dust in the process. Your best bet? A tightly woven natural fiber sisal. Nothing forgives more or holds up better on stairs.

Why not something not so solid color for a bit of statement on the stairs .I think this would look good with the carpet in the next space and I for one cannot see sisal there at all.

I think easy peasy and darn bullet proof too. There are zillions of tones and textures. Look at the two together. Also VERY accepting of any future style change in the living room, in virtually any color palette. Neutral in this material is NOT the same as "builder fuzz" on a stair lol

In fact, what is on the stair now appears a safety hazard!!!

I love dark on stairs. Here is mine. It does have to be vacuumed with my fur babies, but I love it. Mine is a charcoal .

i'm ok with dark as far as fuzz goes, if you go into it with your eyes open. what i'm not ok with is being unable to see the individual stairs when going down in low light.

Dana, I think the first one looks great. I also like how it looks with your floor and the same tan-ish shade in the living room rug. Close in color with Jan's sisal, too. Much better than navy.

Just do the subtle stripes : )The other texture has been done, done and more done. Beginning with the best, which was Masland/Cartesian . I went through about a billion yards in the early nineties.Everyone knocked it off. EXCEPT.......to look great it needs a "secondary" thread color. Few had it. It dies a bit without it. It looks dead as compared with the first. Does that make it bad? No. But the stripe is better. By quite a bit.Has more LIFE and is still forgiving, neutral and updated

1, all the way. You want a "cap and band" installation, not the waterfall that Jan warns against. The subtle stripes will look dynamo with your new stained rail and treads - what an upgrade! Nicely done - just hang in there.
