Before I did anything with the front door, I would paint the house a white-ish color. The house paint color will make way more of an impact then the front door will. With the house painted, then you could do a natural wood door or dark/black front door. Those two things would give your house a big jump away from dated. Then take down all of those things hanging (I'm not sure what they are?) Remove the little pieces hanging on the house including the sign over the door. And then beef up around the front door to make it look more stately with standing tall plants and pots.

Hmmm. Under that overehang, the door already reads as quite dark. If you're against a nice, vibrant red, how about aqua?

Or a lighter Tiffany Blue?:

Blue is a nice statement with yellow. Have you considered any other colors? Something to brighten your front door or bring more attention to it?

I agree with the lighter blues posted by Holly. The door is quite dark, aqua would brighten it up and would work with the house color that is already there.
