DG what verity are they doing you know? Just curious.

I wasn't given a variety when I purchased them, but they make very large, non-branching roots, unlike the ones I had in SC, which made smaller, more branched roots. One of the roots I dug had 14 eyes on it!

14 eyes wow. Your description helps it is French mammoth.

Got some pics. This is the largest one I dug up. Small apple and saucer for scale. This one had a small rotten space on one end, so I'm leaving it out a few days to scab over before I put it back into the ground.

That pretty nice i bet you will get bigger ones next year.

I actually prefer the smaller ones for pickling, but I like the big ones for chow-chow. I had a little of both. Next year, I should get some pretty nice ones for sure.

Yesterday I harvested so of my yams, the white winged were ready the purple winged yamms are still growing. I fried some up for dinner like potato and didn't tell the girls it was yam and not potato. Then asked how were your potatoes. They said great. Tomorrow I will tell them it was my yam. DG what is chow chow?

Chow-chow is a spicy relish made with different things. My mother made one with green tomatoes and one with artichokes.

Oh I've had that granny just called it relish, insert name of main ingredient plus relish. She used to make a lot of different relishes. Something I wish she had taught me.

Chow chow is sort of the "kitchen sink" of relishes. It has a lot of ingredients, just about anything you want to put into it. It's also pickled, whereas relish doesn't have to be. Here's a good article to describe it. I like this blog. It has a lot of good old-timey southern recipes.
