Tween Bedroom Trauma

I recently was interesred in redecorating my tween's room. She likes pink, teal, and rose gold/gold. She also loves cats and foxes. I am looking for a colorful atmosphere. Besides cleaning it up, what should I do?

I’d bring her in on the main decisions: picking a comforter or bedspread that she likes, selecting one of the colors in the fabric for painting the walls, and finding a comfy chair (for example, a beanbag or a papasan chair). As a tween, I’ll bet she’s got some ideas of her own, not to mention what she’s seen in her friends’ rooms that she’d like to use, and she’s coming into a time that her room will be her own special place.

Let your daughter figure out the decorating. Otherwise it’s a losing cause. Might be anyway.

Certainly bring your daughter in on color choices and functional choices. But you're not going to want to re-do her room again in three years when she's a teenager. Make sure the choices you make are ones she can grow into, so when she's fifteen she won't feel like she's in a ten-year-old's room. I would highly recommend "designing up", i.e. make it feel more like a teen room. Look at teen bedrooms on this site, as well as the PB Teen web site for inspiration.

I’m all for involving her, but the best advice I got was to give kids choices when it comes to paint colors — e.g., a grayed aqua like SW Sea Salt vs. a super intense bright teal. Pick bedding and curtains first, paint last. Headboard would be a big upgrade - upholstered headboards are nice for sitting in bed reading, etc. My daughter has always liked nice wall art, my son not so much. With him, I at least insist on framing his Pokémon posters and not just taping them to the wall. If you have room for a small desk, that may be nice for crafts or homework. If not, I don’t think it’s a big deal. The kitchen table works well, too.

I just renovated my daughters room since she is staying home to attend university. We started by focusing on a great headboard-dark gray tufted fabric. Then we had to get rid of the bubble gum pink walls by using Benjamin Moore Hazy Lilac for the headboard wall and a lighter gray lilac for the rest of the room. She has a white/pink comforter and rose gold accents in her decor. We also repurposed some white bookshelves with horizontal shelving between for a makeup vanity and stool. It now looks grown up girly. Just find a starting point and everything else will come together.

Susie, what do you meanby "kitchen table?"

Whatever you decide, I would begin with planning some storage and perhaps desk space. When there is a place for everything you have better odds of a less messy room. Begin your planning with function....how does she use the space? Then go from there. The color of the room will be the easiest part.

I agree that you need to involve her in the design so that she loves it. Look at pictures together to get ideas first then Go shopping together. or you find 2 or 3 things you like in your accepted price point and let her choose from them. My priorities would be getting and actual bed. just a headboard and frame would work. Get it off the floor. Next Blackout drapes. I would never be able to sleep in that room. She will somday want more privacy than the sheers give her. if you like the sheers get double curtain rods to add panels to them. I would normally paint a room a neutral and add color in accessories and art but paint is cheap and she is young it can be repainted let her have something fun. I like picture walls for easy changing out her artwork. Framing them gives them importance. It took me a long time but I think making your bed every day gives a good start to any day. Get a nice comforter or duvet that can be just thrown over to make the bed.

Agree with others to involve your daughter and would add that it should be an incentive to keep her room neat. Keep room clean and tidy for a month, get new furnishings.

I couldn't add more pictures so I'll try again. Give her a nice reading chair and a desk for homework. This is what I like for displaying artwork it can easily be changed by adding or removing art for new ones just add a couple narrow shelves

Love the simplicity of the room with a gorgeous cat canvas from Etsy

You've gotten great suggestions! I concur with Sabrina Alfin's suggestion to "design up" simply because a friend just had that experience with her twins. Two rooms to redo in three years! :) Also echo Design Intervention's suggestion to plan for function first. Otherwise, it's just a room with new stuff in it.

Have you discussed the budget with your daughter? Perhaps that could be a learning experience for her? Figuring out how to divvy up the set amount.

When I hear of foxes, I think of The Little Prince and that wonderful quote about seeing with the heart.

A room with mural / could frame fabric or wallpaper for casual headboard / art. Wouldn't have to paint. :)

If new paint, how about this rich blue, and her pink everywhere - something like the Pantone colors of the year, with a blue and a pink....

    $75.

She likes animals, so maybe less frilly bedding would be better? They added the furry pillow. There are lots of these for $49 each.

What if there was a safe shelf above bed, or elsewhere for rotating? If 12 x 12" not large. Maybe could have animal mix with 3 above bed / center canvas could be bit higher. Neutral, so could change curtains or bedding or paint, later later.

The tween is old enough to clean up/pick up her own room. Let her help with the decor, too.
She has a lot of stuffed animals and toys that she wants to keep in her room. Besides shelves, what should I do to store them?

It can be a dusty set of animals - in small storage bench, even a dressy one - she can pick 1 2 or 3 and place on top for a while.

Relatively inexpensive way to provide easy storage.

Design intervention, I really like this idea.

Everdebz, I really like the blanket! I want one for my own room!

if you're keeping the bed as is, could you purchase a boxspring cover? have her pick out a comforter that she likes, and work around that. Or just do a white or solid cover and pick whatever color you like. it's easier to match paint colors to bed covers than vice-versa.

I love those pink comforters everdebz found and love Design Intervention's storage solution as well. That's one that can grow with a kid. Looks to be a spacious room. Is that little green seat a storage bench? Because I was thinking she could put her stuffed animals in a storage bench. It can be in an easy to wipe vinyl in a neutral colour or something a bit glammed up, if she likes that. Find something that's dual purpose like that. (not sure about the height of this one but it's just an example.)

Tartanmeup, yes, the green seat is a storage bench, but it's not big enough. I like your solution a lot, maybe to put in front of the bed?
Everdebz, the gold blanket, because it brings that animal feel to any room and it looks soft.
I think I need to start with the bed and then I'll go from there. The reason why the bed is on the ground is because I didn't want her to shove all of her stuff underneath there. Now that she is older, I think I want to use the bed frame that I already have and get a headboard. I don't know what color to get that would work best with pink, teal, and rose gold. Or should I just get a bedroom set? Also, this project is on a budget.

Her green items would go with fox in nature - if she loves it. :)

Probably lots of houzzers recall the "find" of under-bed storage, whether zipping plastic, or box... a great thing esp. for seasonal, etc..

There are some great stuffed animal storage ideas here, some of them very simple. I especially like the stuffed animals hanging from the curtain rod set against the wall, and the stuffed animals clothes-pinned to a ribbon hanging down the wall. So simple. https://www.onecrazyhouse.com/stuffed-animal-storage-ideas/

If you put the storage bench in front of the bed, would she actually use it as a bench? Might be more useful if you put it in front of a table or desk that's her homework station. Then it's truly dual-purpose. Just make sure it's the right width and height.

Another storage idea for stuffed toys and the like is a glass-front cabinet. Nothing too tall, a curio cabinet of sorts. Ikea has this one but you could probably find a pretty vintage one on Craigslist. When she's older, she can use it for whatever strikes her fancy (sweaters, shoes and purses? Trophies? Figurine collections? Perfume, makeup? I'd say books and magazines but who knows if they'll still be around by then. :P)

    Ikea - Fabrikor

I don't know what your budget is but if you look on Craigslist, I'm sure you can find a good quality secondhand bedroom set. I often spot them on mine. (Heck, friends gave away a great set.)

What would she like to change first in her room? What will improve the room for her the most? A headboard? Storage? Bedding? Make a plan together, apportion the budget and go down the list by priority. Not everything needs to be done in a day.

Agree with including her - but I like the idea of having her give you ideas of what she loves - maybe have her start a board to collect pictures of rooms she loves. From there - you can put together some options for her to pick from. that way you know you won't hate what she picks out. When I was in middle school my mom told me I could redecorate my room. I wanted it to be black with all kinds of fluorescent colors. No joke. I picked out a black ceiling fan where each blade was a different neon color as my inspiration. Yikes! My Mom slow-walked me until my design taste improved, ha! (She did let me get a hideous bedspread to buy time.) A few years later I picked beautiful white furniture and light blue & pale yellow accents. My mom was a real trooper!!
