I like the black door idea!

This house looks like the architect was going for a more formal look, like an English country house.
It's basically Federal in style I'd say, with the kind of verandas and summer rooms on the end that were common in the 20s and 30s: do you know when they were added?

The only windows on the house that would accept shutters would be the 2nd story center ones; I don't think that they would add anything. Shutters might also accentuate that small (bathroom?) window above the portico on the right.

I agree with you, that painting the front door a dark color would be very attractive.

beautiful home. no to shutters. yes to gloss black door. yes to fabulous landscape with proper moonlighting. a white garden could be phenominal here. be sure to consider fragrance and evening whites.

Hi Bwaesche, Your house is so beautiful. I love it! Our house is the same colour; quite a bit smaller though, but black door which I have attached. I have seen the same colour house with a much darker shade trim on all windows and it was really nice. We could not do that because they we had the vinyl windows and we already had them when we had the house done with stucco. Because you have the white pillars and the white porches I do think that the white trim on the windows is still very nice. I have attached our garden too!

The house was built in 1875 and was occupied by Phillip Livingston Poe (Edgar Allan Poe's cousin). The porches are original and were used as summer sleeping porches. Every room has gas sconces and gas chandeliers.

What an absolutely interesting house to live in! I am totally envious!! :) Gas sconces and gas chandeliers! Beautiful! Enjoy forever! That would be a house I would never want to move out of! When you have your garden it will be totally amazing!

What a beautiful house! I agree with those saying no to shutters. As a general rule, they should never be put on windows that are too wide to actually be covered by closed shutters. So, sets of double hung windows (as you have) would never have had shutters originally. They're not historically accurate for your style house and would not have been intended by the architect originally. Fortunately, your house has such beautiful details that shutters are unnecessary to add interest.

Given the neutral color palette of the house, you could go with just about any color on the door. A glossy black would be perfectly fine, as would a shade of deep red. Of course, only the door would be painted one of these colors. The rest of the trim would remain white.

No shutters. But we can see how fabulous a black door and sidelights (keeping the trim white) plus a lush garden will look!

I like the formality the black shutters give the house, it seems to "organize" the second floor windows and give it a focal point. The trees at the ground floor windows balance and ground it. Love the flowering vine to conceal down spout. Great pic!
