Can either system be expanded for additional filtertaion? We have three filters (sand, iron, carbon) on our system before it gets to the watersoftner, Check with your neighbors for water quality in your area.

Don't check with your neighbors - unless they are chemists. I assume you have done a water analysis - by someone not selling you a filter. That is ALWAYS the first step unless you are on municipal water and can get a good idea from the water quality report.
Post the results here.

Otherwise everything that follows is pure guessing.

Research a Fleck softener.

Here are results from our water analysis:

water hardness - 5

pH - 7

clear water iron - 1.0

TDS - 360

Arsenic - 0.0283 (limit is 0.010)

Bacteria - Neg

Nitrates - Neg

Hi sennaorth, I am a municipal water treatment design engineer. I don’t poke around these forums too often because the residential drinking water market has too many made up terms and technologies for me to keep up with. What state are you in, and are you on a private well? The new arsenic limit of .01 mg/l has been established for some time now and would be a serious regulatory violation if you were on municipal drinking water.

If you are on a private well, you will need to get your water tested for quite a few more compounds than what you listed.
