Kitchen remodel help?

Hello Houzz Helpers.

I could really use help determining if I'm on the right track or if I'm just deferring the inevitable kitchen gutting.

Our kitchen sits in the middle of our house and hasn't been updated for decades. I want to refresh and fix a few design problems (no dishwasher, limited light - no window, and no pantry).

Oh and I should add that our budget is $20K and we have zero DIY ability. Ugh.

My thoughts are:

1) keep most of the existing cabs 'as is' but upgrade hardware, replace counter with white quartz, replace backsplash with white tile or just repaint white, and add a new tile floor (color tbd).

2) remove the lower cab section to the right of the sink to add a dishwasher,

3) add clean white featureless cabs and pantry along the kitchen side of the kitchen/dining wall. Cabinets would stop short of top 1/4 of wall.

4) cut into top 1/4 of wall to add transom windows and/or leave it open to let in light from dining room window

5) replace fridge with more streamlined white fridge that better fills the current fridge space.

Does this seem reasonable and like it's money well spent? Or, am I better to just re-do it all? Can new cabs be successfully blended with old cabs if they're on opposite walls and not side by side? Any suggestions?

Thank you all for your time and ideas.

Do you have additional pictures of the kitchen, so that we can see all 4 walls?

Quartz is expensive, dont put it on top of cabinets you are "making do with", it's a waste of $. the other poster is correct, you can get decent priced cabinets at IKEA. don't paint the backsplash, it will look diy. Either replace it or cover it with bead board. Instead of adding a window to the adjacent room I would widen the doorway.

if you go w/the chinese pre made cabinets, you would spend about 4K on those. prefab granite countertops cost about 400 or so (you hire a fabricator to cut them for you. maybe another 800-1K)

Appliances, look on craigslist for new, floor models or slightly used. I did a flip house kitchen twice as big as yours, with an island, and spent 10K. everything. found the appliances on craigslist, all new, and all killer prices. (7 yrs ago) chinese cabs-pre-fab granite.

Ikea is also an option, but they're made of MDF. even the chinese cabinets are solid wood/plywood base.

educate yourself on simple DIY stuff. they have free classes at Home Depot.

this is what I started with

go to cabinet places to get an idea of what you want. solid plywood base is preferable over a fiberboard or MDF base.

go to a stone yard and walk around. see how much you need. those pre fabs come in 9' lengths.

check craigslist. you'd be amazed at the kitchens that people sell on there. people buy homes with almost brand new kitchens but want to redo them. I've seen entire kitchens for sale for 1K that resemble my finished pic, above!

And yes, widening the doorway works too. :)

Have you thought about moving the refrigerator to the wall that has the artwork and adding a pantry next to it. You'd then extend your countertop on the stove side with cabinets above and below.
