I was going to say acetone (acetone is usually an ingredient in nail polish remover). A quick Google search says that acetone should be fine to use on stainless steel. Test in a small inconspicuous corner first. Avoid getting it on plastic (tried to use it to get a really horrible sticker off a plastic juice pitcher and etched it pretty extensively - got the sticker off, at least...).

Hope you have luck in getting it off! Just wanted to sympathize... my now 18 yo son dropped a bottle of bright pink nail polish off the “bridge” area of our second floor when he was about 2 years old. It went straight down onto the tile in the foyer directly next to hubby’s office doors. Fortunately, the doors were closed and the pink nightmare never touched the light beige carpet in hubby’s office, nor did it make it to the same colored carpet that was in the nearby dining room. Almost all of it came up... but even 10 years later when we sold that house, if you looked closely enough you could see a little bit of bright pink nail polish stuck in the wood grain of the office doors, and there were some spots in the light grey grout that were forever bright pink. Ugh! That boy! Good thing he was always so cute... grrrr....

Acetone on a clean cotton cloth. Won’t damage stainless (as long as it’s real not one of the ‘finger print free’ stainless that are actually paint)

I have had good luck with a straight razor blade and gently scraping in the direction of the grain of the SS

My murder scene, chloebud and acm, was a bloody nose. Off to the ER, then surgery…not pretty.

So I put this off for a long time because I was still scared. :) Finally tried it yesterday. Didn't ruin the surface, that I can tell, but it also didn't really remove the nailpolish marks. So I'm sort of stuck again...

If it's just a shadow and actually not caked nail polish, perhaps some Barkeepers or Softscrub on a damp sponge with the grain. Test first.
