Return air vent install in basement studded wall

We are finishing our basement and need to install return vents in the 2 bedrooms, rec room, and family room. The framing in the basement is all non load baring. Do we cut the top plate of our framing to run the return vent down through a wall cavity to the bottom of the wall? All my research is pointing to yes - since the walls aren’t load baring.

Your return vents should be at the top of the wall and yes you can cut the plate. None of the walls in the basement are load bearing unless they were required to be there due to the upstairs structural change or part of the original design.

If the section you cut out is what provides support for the rest of the basement wall, be sure to provide alternative support.
