Throughout Winter Months

Winters in the Chicagoland Area can be particularly brutal

and hard to adjust to. With the onset of frigid temperatures

and excessive wind chills we would like to recommend the

following to insure the protection of your home.


- Keep your overhead garage door tightly closed at all

times

- Do not "dial down" the thermostat while you are away

- Make sure all garden hoses are removed from the

exterior hose bibs

- Keep windows latched when they are closed. With

extreme temperatures vinyl windows may not fully

seal otherwise

- If you have a humidifier installed, adjust your

humidistat when the outside temperature fluctuates. If

the humidistat is not properly adjusted, excessive

condensation may occur on windows, doors, walls,

ceilings, or attic areas


WHEN TEMPERATURES OR WIND CHILL IS BELOW Zero


- Turn water faucet to center position and let it drip slowly

in any bathroom that is located above garage or on an

outside wall

- Open vanity and kitchen sink cabinet doors to allow for

better air flow

- Keep interior doors open throughout the home to ensure

even heat distribution

By following some of these guidelines, you and your home will be

comfortable and safe this winter.

    What temperature do you recommend the thermostat be set to while someone is away from the home?

    Thank you Mike for your questions.


    We would recommend a range between 67 and 69 degrees for your thermostat settings. We set all of our Express Homes/Models between these ranges. As it relates to the humidistat most have the settings marked on the facade of the stat so that you can adjust accordingly. However, I have attached a typical chart that will assist with the adjustments.



    I hope this information assists you throughout the winter months.

    Lowering the thermostat when you are away from the house for several days is a good way to save money. I see no harm setting the thermostat in the 55-60 degree range. If you have a WiFi thermostat you can raise the temperature remotely an hour before you expect to arrive home.


    Where I live the temperature in the winter varies every few days. If I had a humidifier I would be constantly changing the humidistat. New construction homes should be tight and should not need a humidifer. Humidifiers are the last resort for dealing with winter humidity problems in my opinion.

    Thank You for your additional comments and I would concur for the most part as it relates to finding ways to save money and utilize technology to assist. I would like to clarify my stance on humidification. The majority of the homes finishes let alone the structural components made out of wood today have over 50% of hardwood flooring, oak stairs, a significant amount of cabinetry and millwork throughout. With all of these variables within a new home, humidification control is a must and a necessity. Although one may do a fantastic job at letting the home and the material acclimate, every household and the amount of moisture in the home will differ based on numerous factors. At any given time based on outside temperatures and different wood products, moisture equilibrium will differ with the relative humidity of the air surrounding it.

    In addition, since the wood products come from many areas throughout the country the moisture content varies therefore the equilibrium will differ in these products. This is typically most noticeable in the winter months, thus the use of a humidifier, while the summer months are typically less noticeable due to humidification occurring through the use of an air conditioning source.
