Does everyone like how my kitchen is looking?

last modified: 7 years ago

Started remodeling my kitchen about 3 weeks ago. Took out a wall that was separating kitchen from dining room and made it open.

Went with Palm Beach Dark Chocolate cabinets from Cabinets To Go and Seychelles 12x24 floor tile from Floor & Decor. Have yet to make a final choice on the tops granite/quartz and wall colors along with door knobs/pulls for the cabinets.

What does everyone and what color scheme would you go for in the tops?

Thanks man that's what I was going for. Couldn't really find any design inspiration that matched exactly what I wanted. Part of me wanted to go with the the Super White tile which was a shade lighter than the Seychelles but I worried that it would make the floor the focal point in the kitchen when I would really like it to be my countertops

There's going to be an island too. I'm installing all the base cabinets today so I will keep everyone updated

Is the island the same color?
A contrasting color for the island could be nice, if it's not too late.

    Good work!

I was thinking that too was so stressed picking everything out I just stuck to keeping them all the same color.

You need to add a bunch more lighting. Recessed and under cabinet both. Maybe pendants over the island.

On my screen, in your second pic, your floor tile looks a bit too bright white against your dark brown cabinets. That could be the lighting. From what I can see, your chosen countertop goes with your cabinets.

Btw, is "m thg" in your title text speak or a typo? I ask because I'm not proficient in the first and Matt M's reply of "M thgking" makes me doubt a typo. :)

There's actually no lighting at all yet but all the electric is ready to go for it. Wanted to get all the cabinets in place before I installed the lighting. Going with 2 pendant lights over the 5ft island, 1 over the sink (pendant or recessed not sure yet) and 4 recessed lights in the ceiling. Going to do the under cabinet lighting as well

    This is the layout

The lighter tile is the Super White which I was contemplating going with but ended up going with the darker one

@tartanmeup definitely a typo! I made a few and immediately tried to edit my post but I guess you can't do that on the app. And I think alot of it might be the lighting I'm really hoping it all comes out looking good

Everything looks cohesive in your bottom pic just above. :) Hopefully a pro can chime in on the lighting. My experience: get more than you think you need. We evaluated our needs on a sunny day and underestimated. Glad you'll have under cabinet lighting. It's essential.

And thanks for explaining about the typo. I do struggle keeping up with the cool kids. :P

I actually like your current floor. Here are some pictures.

I would have extended the hardwood floor into the kitchen area which would have made the space look continuous and larger. Something to consider for your next house!

I would keep the counters light and your backsplash too.

Taj Mahal quartzite might also work with the colors you have.

@tartanmeup Thankyou! and yes I definitely want it to be bright! I'll keep posting updates

    Hi Ben!

Your drawing shows a really narrow upper cabinet between the corner cab and the window, but I don't see that in the photo. Did you decide against it? I had 12" uppers in my old kitchen, and they were a real pain to use. Anything smaller would be even worse.

It looks like the upper cabinet to the left of the sink can be moved to the left, to line up with the DW, giving you space on both sides of the window.

@Annkh Yeah there ended up not being enough space for the 12" and yes exactly I'm going to try to line up the cabinet to the left perfectly with the dishwasher

@chispa I definitely considered extending the hardwood floors throughout the kitchen but decided against it as it wouldve been a huge pita to match up the old original hardwood to the new

@Hansen thankyou! The floors that are in now are the Seychelles 12x24 from Floor & Decor. I'm just really looking to see if people like my choice and get recommendations on granite/quartz color schemes

Nice! Have you chosen some samples for countertop?

@Sandra Martin I have a few more besides the one I posted. I'll take some pictures with the other ones when I get home and post them see what you all think

You made the right choice with the floor. I would go with recessed lighting over the sink. I might even skip the pendant lighting over the island & just do recessed lighting everywhere. I do like the countertop choice. When it comes time for the backsplash I would go with a light, simple tile similar to your floor, maybe a shade or two lighter.
