Door Mat Needed

I need a large door mat that can be exposed to the elements and is not coir or coco or whatever that fiber is. I currently have a 36 x 72 coco mat from Frontgate. It is in a shallow entry, so not completely protected from the elements but at least partially protected. It is almost 5 years old. It has turned black on the edge closest to the opening and that edge has begun to unravel. I’ve looked at Frontgate, Grandin Road, and a couple of other places but I haven’t found an outdoor mat that isn’t coir or coco.

Any suggestions?

Are you looking for something that’s more pretty or more functional? I only ask because we have this in front of our garage entry and it’s held up pretty well. Especially when you consider how hard our winters are and that it’s the only entry to the house we use. I bought ours in the black/gray from Costco for about 20.00, it’s a heavy duty rubber and it may even be recycled rubber, but I don’t recall for sure.

If you’re looking for something that is more upscale though this probably won’t be a good fit for you.

We have the LL Bean waterhog and it has worked well. I went through a few others until I got this and I’m happy with it. It isn’t intrusive, works well, and wears well. We’ve had ours for 3 years and still looks as good as the day we bought it. Not as “pretty” as I’d like but I’ll stick with it. https://m.llbean.com/llb/shop/76924?pn=pd&skCatId=76924

Have you ever had a Waterhog? They're great.

Another fan of Waterhog. I got mine through L.L. Bean. Love them.

Frontgate has a Water & Dirt Shield mat. I contacted the company and they said it wasn’t appropriate for outdoor use. Because the Waterhog looks similar, I contacted LL Bean. They said the Waterhog can be used outdoors. In fact the person I was chatting with has one outdoors. She says it works great! And the 36 x 72 costs less than the one that is currently rotting on my porch.

If I go with the Waterhog, any recommendations on colors? My porch is washed aggregate concrete. I’m thinking maybe brown or khaki to just blend in and be unobtrusive.

localeater I love the lobster rope mats. I’ve marked the Etsy shop so I can find it again. My daughter loves all things nautical, so they would make great mats for her. The 36 x 72 is $400. For an outdoor mat, that’s a little rich for my blood.

lukkiirish, those mat would work fine, but they are too small.

This is what I currently have (stock photo). I loved it when it was new. But it hasn’t aged well.

I didn't realize waterhogs could be used outdoors. I also need something and though I like the coirs, I don't like the ones with the rubber back and in general mine haven't held up well. I currently have a cute woven outdoor rug that I use in summer but it curls up on the edges and becomes a tripping hazard. I'm going to look into the waterhogs.

The lobster mats are cool - love the colorful look. I wonder how long they look that pretty - probably not long enough for that price.

I have a waterhog for just inside the house in our mudroom. It works great there, but I wouldn't think it would be so great outdoors if it gets rained on. It seems like it would get wet underneath the mat and very hard to dry out, since it is so flat, and no aeration.

I have the black rubber mat from frontgate and have had it for about 8 years now-different design than they have currently, but it still looks great. Due to the decorative holes in the mat, it doesn't hold water, like the waterhog does. Maybe waterhog would work great for you, I just wouldn't have thought to try it in the outdoor elements.

Mine is very similar to this LL Bean nautical rope doormat. It is holding up really well and I love the look.https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/121122?feat=514001-plalander&csp=f

olliesmom - that was my thought as well. My entry is covered but it would still get somewhat wet at times.

Sharon, we have that one on our back patio/pool area, and we love it. It is heavy to pick up and clean around, we have the dark brown one, and it looks great. I'm not sure if I got ours from LL Bean or Frontgate.

bbstx, I did want to add, ours is much bigger than the one you need, so that is why it is so heavy.

I, too, thought the Waterhog wouldn’t be suitable for outdoors. The description says it hold 1 1/2 gallons of water per square yard. I envision it getting soaked from a rain and folks having to squish through it to get into the house. Attached is a screenshot of the description. It seems a little inconsistent.

If I buy it, it will only be because LL Bean has a great return policy.

I had one of these for years at our last house. It held up really well.

I was just on the Birchlane website and was surprised to see that they have quite the assortment of door mats. You might want to see if there is something suitable there. I’ve noticed too that a variety of them come in more than one size.

We have this indoor/outdoor rug from Costco. It's 6' x 2'. I looked on their website, but they aren't available online, only in the stores.

Sueb, those are really cute, but don’t come in the sizes I need. I’m looking for something that is about 36 x 72.

Lukkiirish, thanks for the heads up. Like most places, the size I want is the coir or coco fibers. My door faces east and is recessed into a small enclosure, but it still gets rained on. And rain just causes those fibers to rot.

terriks, thanks but the closest Costco is an hour and a half away.

I just bought a Waterhog from LLBean. It looked like my best option. Hope I like it because I suspect return shipping is high!

I just visited the Ballard Designs store that has opened in the Chicago area and came home with the Highgate rubber doormat . It is available in a variety of sizes.

ETA: Right after I posted, I saw that you have ordered the Waterhog. I would think you'd be able to return the mat at an LLBean store, provided you have one near you, if necessary.

Our LL Bean waterhog is outside our front door. We have a bluestone stoop and I chose the charcoal gray color. We do have an overhang but it does get wet and we haven’t had any issues. I hope you like it! This is an old pic.
