To me it doesn’t look particularly old, and the bit in the middle is odd...Polynesians in front of a volcano? But the sides look cut off abruptly, as if it was originally longer. The placement close to the bottom makes me wonder if it is a piece that has been glued on.

The home was built in 1989. I have no idea if it was part of the original build. But I think you may be seeing the bottom of the TV that they have mounted above it. I do have another photo showing the entire fireplace that may put its place in perspective. It looks like a woman in front of some sort of plant. I've lived in the South Pacific, and I didnt get that vibe. I thought it reminded me of a middle America, Mayan, or similar region. But I really have no clue. I was thinking that maybe this is a reproduction of a well-known work. I dont even know if this is common on a fireplace or if someone just added it. Thank you for your help.

Total WAG on what it's depicting, but I'd say each figure is holding part of one long piece of draped cloth, so that must be significant. I suspect the cloth is made from the plant that's shown and it's important to their culture and existence. Do the mounds/ripples in front of the volcano represent water or growing fields?! I see vertical lines, so I'd say it's the fields where the plant is grown.

I would think that because it is one brick off the floor that it is newer build. A repo. The older houses here fireplaces are flush with the floor -- the tile or whatever. But code now won't let you build that way.

Hm. They seem to be harvesting a textile. Any idea what that plant is? It sure isn't cotton.

I think it was made by someone who has never seen anything being grown or harvested, ever. :) It makes for a nice fireplace though. The overall look is elegant and traditional and then you get close and see the Oompa Loompas in front of a chocolate river.

(I think the Oompa Loompas were stuck on--it looks like a different wood.)

The house was built in 89...the fire place has a tile surround it appears, with what is probably premade wood composite molded ornamentation. Those figures don't tell a particular story....they are just vaguely "classical" looking...Greek? Roman? Etruscan? Egyptian?
