Hidden Front Door | Ideas for Curb Appeal

The door is to the left of the porch. You can’t see it from straight on so we’re having trouble figuring out what to do for fixing up the curb appeal. You can’t change the door location because it’s a stair case to the basemen. Does anyone have any ideas to help make the front of this home better? We’d really appreciate it!

You can add some interest to the porch with a couple of chairs and several potted plants. I’d put a large one near the top of the stairs. The front window is perfect for a window box under it as well, that would add some nice color and bring your attention to that side.

You can also add some sort of wood architectural element on the empty space of wall on the porch. It depends on your style, but a small old colorful door with plants around it or a grape drying rack or some vintage wooden decorative piece could be fun.

A better landscape will improve curb appeal. Shrubs and flowering plants of different heights and a tree will do it.

Remove the shutters, add foundation plantings, replace metal post and railings with more substantial wooden ones

1. Move the stairs so they are at the end of the porch and when you step up, you walk straight into the front door. OR...

2. Add a fake like front door like where the steps indicate there should be one. Like another window made of mirror with a planter box under it. OR...

3. Move the actual door to where the steps indicate it should be.

I am not a big fan of foundation plantings. I think they box the house in, become overgrown, are planted too close and look ugly!! But, that's me!! Don't hide your house with shrubs. Put small dwarf plantings next to the foundation if you must but then move the rest of the landscaping away from the house. Don't put a tall shrub at the corner of the house. Move the area away and plant a tree with a walkway between the tree and the house.

And the shutters on the front do nothing for the house and I would remove them.

I like the suggestion to place the opening and stairs at the far right of your porch and, therefore, to walk straight toward the front door. I think you should meet with a landscape designer or with someone at your garden center who can come up with a plan for you to do the work. Forgive my bad drawing technique, but a tree located towards the middle would minimize the fact that there is no front door in the center of your house. Then you could work from that point on, enlarging the planting bed across the whole front of the house.
