Asbestos Roof

We have an 80 year old asbestos shingled roof. It has been wonderful. No leaks and it adds so much to the design of the house. It looks like real slate. The roof now is stained and needs cleaning. Is there a safe way to clean an asbestos roof.? Are asbestos roofs that are not bothered safe?

I would talk with an asbestos abatement contractor. A roofing or general contractor would be taking on a huge liability just for cleaning this.

What if we eventually replaced the roof. Would that be a major deal? Sounds like we should not have the roof. Are they safe?

Asbestos is not safe when it is friable. To make it friable it has to be disturbed somehow. You or your roofing contractor will have to hire an abatement contractor to take care of the demolition of the roof.
