I'd take a look at using Toyon or Bush Mallow here too. Its possible that you have heavy clay soil causing the mold, Podocarpus wont be too happy in heavy clay. I'd be hesitant to use Oleander as a lot of people can get contact dermatitis from the leaves.

If this was an Extension Service recommendation and it were me I would do that. And if you are going to re-plant with drought tolerant plants keep in mind that - as might be expected, because they are often adapted to dry places in nature - those can tend to be drainage sensitive, more prone to problems with puddling or lingering dampness than moisture-loving plants. Also certain chaparral types like manzanita may not shoot up quickly like you presumably want.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Here are the options we are considering for hedge given that we have heavy clay soil

• Honeysuckle
• Chinese Holly (though not sure prickly leaves work with kids playing in the backyard?)

Will either of these work? Would love to hear your expert advise.
