"Sombreuil, Cl."

Just at dusk yesterday, I spotted this one large, lovely bloom on 'Sombreuil, Cl' -- My old plant, put in the ground in 1987 ... we almost lost it, but it's making a comback.

A good reminder of spring, on a dark, chilly, wet Southern Calif. day . . .

The ironic thing, though, is that this is NOT an old rose.

It's a modern Large-flowered climber, which was for decades confused in commerce with 'Mlle. de Sombreuil,' an 1858 introduction.

    Here is the REAL thing:

This rose more or less sneaks into the rose world circa 1959, introduced by one Melvin Wyant as "Colonial White" (which name I felt was a better choice for it than leaving it as Sombreuil).

It was probably bred some time in the 1940's by a neighbor of Wyant's ... and (I'm not kidding) stolen by Wyant. We absolutely know that he did such things. I suspect that he waited to introduce it until its real breeder had gone to his just reward.

We find it, next introduced by Roses of Yesterday and Today as 'Sombreuil,' Tea, 1858 ... and sold around the world as that (and, incidentally, infected with rose mosaic virus -- <SIGH>).

But whatever you want to call it, it's still a fine rose.
