area rug options

i like the first rug best i think and would move the rug closer to the bed so that he steps on it coming off the ladder. butt it right up to the ladder and slide

Thanks Cheryl..so the long part would go all the way to the wall underneath the bed and extend out? That would leave about 3 feet of bare wood from the end of the rug to the bookcase. Would this look OK?

I would pick your two favorite rug options, and then let your son make the final decision. I like the first two options. Is there enough height/clearance for him to sit underneath the bed without banging his head getting up and down? If so, I would move the bean bag chair underneath (better yet, get another one and have two under there).

You could also look at fort/tent options. You could put any rug or scrap carpet inside to make it more comfortable (you won’t see it).

I like the middle two choices. This first one can look a bit girly with the patchwork. The middle ones also go better with the bedding. I would use it in the middle of the room and then get a smaller solid rug to go in the space under the bed.

I really like any of Beverly’s options - I think I would go with a fun-but-not-necessarily-childish option (like the yellow/white patterns). Your son will grow out of the stars/space/themes (more quickly than you imagine!) and a more universal pattern will be able to be used in the room’s next iterations...

BTW - Love the idea of a bearskin rug (or similar) under the loft portion! Nice, cozy play area!

I did see the tent/fort covers online too. I like them also. Or I could maybe use a cool shower curtain. So it seems like nobody likes the round rug. This makes it hard because it was my husband's first choice. lol. The middle two have the advantage of being padded with memory foam to protect against accidents but they are the smallest and only 5 feet wide. I like the idea of two rugs which I didn't really consider before. I could do a solid color or coordinating pattern underneath just the Loft portion.

I like your rug options. Do you think I should go with more of a yellow color for the rug instead of yellow and blue? Do I have too much blue already?

just when I thought I could look anymore.....I see this that is large enough pattern then it wouldn't clash with the bedding and also it seems to be in the right color scheme. It's a larger rug but it could cover from underneath the loft well out to almost the end of the bookcase. what do you guys think? Gray and yellow. Do you think the yellow is too muted compared to the bedding yellow? I should add, my son is only 2.5 so he will have time to enjoy the more babyish looking rugs.

At his age, I would do a fun/childish looking rug.......you have plenty of time for more mature looking rugs later. Enjoy the early years while you can! The rug won’t last forever anyway.

I would consider using the round solar system rug in the open part of his room (in front of the bookcase), and a coordinating rectangular rug underneath the loft. It will give him some soft areas to play/read/sit, and break up all the rectangles in the room.

the only problem with the solar system rug is that it's very thin and number two it is seven and a half feet all the way around so much of it would sit underneath the Loft portion, which may make it hard to get a separate rug that doesn't clash for underneath.
