“Quite shady” Does it get any sun? Is there reflected light? Or is is someplace such as surrounded by buildings and overhanging trees where it is dim and gets no reflected or indirect light and no dappled light?

While I don’t grow this particular clematis, and it is more shade tolerant than most (and the flowers keep their color best with less direct sun), I am fairly certain that it won’t do well in really deep shade based on my experience with clematis in general and what I read about it. I found references to bright shade and part sun and dappled sun and 2 hours of sun, but no references to deep shade. If it survives in deep shade it will be sparse and with few flowers.

Thank you for responding. The area is on the east side of my house at the property line. That side is tree lined, but I think we can trim some of the trees to let more light in. The clematis definitely won’t get any direct sunlight, but I think I can brighten the area up a bit. Worst case I’ll move it to an area with more sun. I can see this particular spot from my patio and think it would be so pretty to see it climbing up the trees there.

I grew this in my old garden in a mostly shady position, based on reports of its shade tolerance. And this was fairly open shade, especially earlier in the day. It never bloomed very heavily but the flowers did stand out against the shady background! And this will never be a large vine - 6-8 feet is typical and maybe as much as 10' in an ideal location, so "climbing up trees" may be wishful thinking :-)

Got it. Some of the information on this clematis lists its max height as 12 ft and these are smaller scrub trees so I was more thinking scrambling along the shorter trees/fence. I didn’t really expect it to get a ton of blooms, but enough to brighten/bring some color to the area. Thanks!

I have grown Silver Moon for 3 years now in zone 5b/6a west of Detroit. I have 3 plants that grow as ground cover among some Blue Chip junipers between my driveway and a stone wall that I'm hoping they will drape down over. They get morning and very late afternoon sun. Because this is a raised wall location with minimally improved sandy soil, water doesn't stay around long, but with weekly watering they manage to put out enough blooms to be attractive. The color is interesting in certain parts of the seasons and at certain times of the day, because the flowers can have a sort of glow, so the flowers are definitely noticeable from the street about 75 feet away, and look good with the junipers
