Hard to say exactly without pictures but I'd go maple. The red tones in cherry can be very hard to work with

After seeing it I'm changing my vote to cherry. Just know that cherry naturally darkens over time so it won't always remain that color. It will get darker and more red as it ages

@Sina sadeddin architectural design, I posted the pic above as it did not post for some reason. The cherry has gotten darker from the sun, but is a natural, unstained cherry.

I like the Cherry, but I am partial to Cherry as I just think it is a prettier wood.

Consider how the wood will shift in color over time.

That cherry does look darkened already--and it's very nice with that granite. If you do maple, fine a different stone.

Don't worry about if it's in or out of fashion. What's in now won't be by the time your home is done anyway! :) (Both have been around forever and will continue to be popular.)

I would consider a lightly stained cherry. Cherry will darken over time. However, maple tends to darken and turn yellow over time as well.

I have natural maple. I also have a lot of natural light. Over time the light has turned the maple very orange. I recently refinished the maple with a cherry stain because of the orange.

I refinished a previously terribly red stained cherry coffee table, which is now sealed for a natural finish. It has darkened a bit but has become more rich. That was only six years ago. The change is not as dramatic as the photo THOR posted above. Guess that depends on exposure. Mine is 4' from a large east facing window.

I put in a bunch of cherry windows, doors, and trim in my addition a few years ago. My idiot GC filled the holes to match new cherry. I now have to dig out putty that looks like THOR's before pic in miles of woodwork that look like THOR's after. :/

Natural cherry does go orange. Your sample might get orangier. I do not think it's a bad thing, but others might disagree.

There are kitchen reveals where owners put brown stain without red undertones on cherry cabs. I womder what they end up with as the cherry darkens.

Maple tends to get blotchy when stained, but a good finisher can minimize that.

My vote is the cherry. I'm just not a fan of stained maple cabinets (blotchy if stained med/dark...and natural and light maple look very dated to me (1990s). Cherry absorbs the stain better and has a deeper beauty that maple just can't compete with. You can't beat a brownish stained cherry or hickory kitchen. To me, probably one of the most timeless cabinet choices.

I just googled my question because I was curious. This is what one finisher posted:

”Try a 50% mix of Olympic walnut and their natural (to dilute color). It finishes to a medium warm brown. By far the best cherry color I have ever done. It eliminates the red color without really darkening much at all.”

That post doesn’t address what brown-stained cherry looks like in a few years, but there is a lot of advice about combating the orange/red if you research.

I have to say I have always had stained cabinets, including Cherry, and they have never changed so much that I felt they ended up a way different color. Any change has been subtle.

I personally would do full overlay no matter what wood/stain/paint I chose. I just like It better. I don’t really think the type of wood or finish really factored in to that decision for me.
