Keep searching for table runners that have the grays and gold in them to tie the two spaces together. Here are a couple that I found on Kohl’s.com

Agree with loobab, pratically functionally for everyday dining.

Long & narrow, so you don't have to move it around everytime to eat.

The runner you have is fine to get started with. A long narrow arrangement with decorative salt & pepper, anything used at table daily that can be attractive as a group on a long tray.

If you put anything tall for decor, make it easy to remove when dining. i can't stand sitting at a table & some tall decor prevents me seeing someone at the table I want to see & talk to. having to peek side to side to see everyone is frustrating. Well..Occassionally, it's good if you want to hide behind the agrangement to avoid that occasional oddball on the holidays. lol.

Please, don’t worry about finding art to match your counters. Find art that you love, and you’ll find it goes fine! I’d go really colorful, abstract paintings work, but so do florals. You can use anything really, you can buy large plates from thrift shops and hang them on the walls, you can hang antique or vintage kitchen utensils, really, anything that’s colorful, bright, and makes you smile.

Re the comments on the backsplash, if you like it, leave it. Unless the commenters want to fund a redo? LOL

Yellow and coral look great with grey. Maybe do 3 yellow canisters etc...along counter to bring a pop of color. Your kitchen looks good in my opinion. Just needs a little tweaking with accessories.

    Hi Kim,

I don’t know how large your wall space is where you’d like some wall art, but here are some options that would tie together the grey, brown and caramel tones you already have in your space!

It has a ton of potential with just a few simple decorative accents :)

Would obviously depend on what kind and content of art you enjoy. These all have nature vibes. But you get the point of combining warm and cool tones, even if you don’t like these particular options.

if you post a straight on photo of the wall space you’re working with, I can give you some visuals of art in the space. (And size of the wall). Hope this helps :)

Pam K really like what you added now that was being helpful!! Ya I wasn’t tying in the beige with the gray so need to do that thanks so much. If you locate a larger rug I can use I think the one I got is too small although I like it.
Pam K this is the size of the wall space

What color do you have in adjacent rooms? Since everything Is so neutral, you can bring in accents of other color to tie the rooms together.

This table runner might tie in the beige and gray better but I need 90” only comes 70”
This I think ties in the beige and gray what are your thoughts only thing is it only comes 70” I need 90”
It may just be the lighting, but the wall colour makes the cabinets look as thought they need a good cleaning.

    Hi Kim,

Okay I’ll work on some mock ups with art and other decor items.

What are the dimensions of this wall, from door casing to corner:

Is this wall available for art? If so can you take another photo of it and tell us where this wall is located relative to your kitchen.

This wall appears to be on the other side of your sliding door. Perhaps could put a piece of art on each side flanking the sliding door. Is this the same amount of space as the other side where you originally said art could go (first photo above)?

I‘ll see what I come across in the way of rugs and table runners too. Tying in some of the light yellow from your family room could work wonderfully too.

    Be back soon :)

Okay so I put together a few art pieces in your space. I have some more saved to my computer to work on, but for now I'm going to need to run my little guy over to a birthday party! So I'll get around to doing those other visuals later :)

Kim, let me know what you think of the art pieces. That will give us a direction to head in for future choices.

I do agree that the rug should be bigger and table runner should be longer. I also feel that with the color of your bar stools and kitchen cabinets, the runner should have some white in it (along with the grey and beige if possible). I found a rug that could work, but I'm not really sure what your style is. They have a size that's more or less 3 ft x 4 ft. Not sure of the size of your current rug?

    Art:

below could work really beautifully if you also bring in some light green accents, really pretty!

Okay, let me know what you think and then I'll work on the others later, depending on your feedback. Talk later :)

The lighting looks much better in last picture posted. Compared to the 1st photos posted. Did you change bulbs or is there a different light on peninsula? Maybe it's the wood floor reflecting on base cabinets. Is there a light over dining room table giving yellow hues when on?

Here are some other rug options that contain grey and beige/brown tones. Thoughts?

Houzz is being super glitchy today with uploading photos from my phone. Fingers crossed.

I think yellow would really brighten up the kitchen. I love the runner you have, maybe sew 2 together and use the excess as a placemat on the counter.

Been trying to upload the rest of the rug photos on and off for last 2 hrs. Still not working. Will try again tomorrow from my desktop.

Any feedback on art or rugs so far?

Pam K I really like the art work I need to measure wall haven’t been home all day! I also saw this rug what if you think
  • 6 years ago
I am trying to coordinate colors that go with existing counters/tile color scheme.....

    Hi Kim,

I do like that rug you posted. However, I read the reviews and a lot of them seem to comment on the poor quality over time, it wearing poorly, falling apart etc. So I'd probably skip it to be safe. It wasn't 1 reviewer, it was many of the more recent ones. Sorry!

I'm putting together some more visuals for you to take a look at. Post again in a few :)

Barbara Simpson: I agree that yellow would brighten up the kitchen beautifully!

Pam K thanks after I posted the rug I read the reviews and agree totally. Thanks
  • 6 years ago
I wish the rug I got came a little bigger ugh! I really like it.
Pam the kenmore gray oat rug is the right color scheme not sure I am crazy about the fading of the rug. But I get your idea pull in the beige and gray tones!

Hi Kim, Okay here are some options for you. My perspective of this design challenge is twofold:

    - tie together the grey, brown and beige tones in your existing kitchen finishes

    - achieve flow with the adjacent family room (happy, sunny, somewhat colorful) by tying it in to the kitchen through use of color. Right now, kitchen is much more dark than the adjacent family room.

I feel both of these goals can be achieved simultaneously. I don't find them to be mutually exclusive. Tying together the finishes in your kitchen doesn't NEED to mean a completely neutral room, unless that's what you want. There are ways to tie in the grey/tan tones also with color.

So as I see it, there are 3 options:

    1) Carry in some of the yellow colors from adjacent family room into kitchen. In my opinion, this also successfully bridges the gap between the grey and beige kitchen finishes. It also makes the kitchen look way brighter and happier.

Of course different art/fabric can be used if this isn't your style, but you get an idea of the color flow between spaces.

    _____________________

    2) Carry in some of the yellow-ish colors from adjacent family room, plus some green and seaglass tones. You can see some of the grey and beige tones in the fabric.

Again, same concept that different art and fabric can be used (although I think this fabric is BEAUTIFUL and pretty much perfect for bringing in colors + grey/beige neutrals!!

    _____________________

    3) Keeping everything neutral and just moving forward with the grey, brown and beige tones for all elements.

I've already posted some images previously of art that has only neutral tones, and there are many more options in that same direction. My only concern with this option is it doesn't do as good of a job tying in the elements from your family room as options 1 and 2 do.

    _____________________

There are of course any number of other options for accent color that could be used, I just personally think these are the most harmonious with your neutral kitchen and yellow family room.

Let me know if you have any specific thoughts, a clear winner, or if you'd like me to replace anything in any of the mock ups!!

Hope this makes it easier for you to picture your kitchen in different ways as one harmonious flowing space :)

Pam K you have been helpful I was trying too much to match things to my counters and was not sure how to do that without using the colors in it. Which I didn’t want!
Pam K I like the window treatment fabric what is it called. I don’t see the gray/beige that you are referring to in it? Maybe it’s the was it posted colors not clear.

Hi Kim, Didn't see your post just before.

Which fabric are you referring to? The one in option 1 or 2? FYI if you click on the images they will expand and become more clear. You can also zoom in.

    Ballard Designs Courtney Spa

There are touches of brown, taupe, beige and grey throughout. Little touches on all the flowers and leaves, and the branches show it best. The dominant colors are linen, green, citrine (yellow ish), spa, aqua etc. But it brings in enough touches of the neutrals to work.

you have a neutral palette... you can use any color u want.

your walls are gray which is a great backdrop for just about any art work....

if u feel u are using too much gray, then don't use it anything you are doing...etc table runners, artwork, rugs etc...

use bright yellows (lemons)... earthy greens, deep reds, burnt orange... stay in the warm palette. just stay with the same style, as in don't mix modern with traditional etc....

I deleted my recent comments. Didn't mean to interrupt the chat with Kim & Pam. Seems like you 2 have a plan. Good luck with everything.

Thoughts?? I don’t really want to go with yellow as I have some yellow in my family room so would like to do a different color.

sprtphntc7a I agree but my I struggle is with pulling it all together with matching the counters and backplash to things as well for example if a print looks good with the gray walls does it go with the counters/backsplash that’s what I am having difficulty with!!

artistsharonva I am considering all advice sorry you felt you were interrupting no worries thank you Kim

Kim, i get exactly what u are saying :)... my point being, just use the walls as a backdrop, not your primary color to decorate with - if u feel you are using too much gray and want to incorporate another color.

all your other elements, cabs, floor counter and b/s are in the warm palette...you don't have gray in any of those elements. that's why i said u can use any 'warm' color since gray really is a neutral

pick a color, a print, artwork, a patten that u love and play off of that. say u fall in love with a busy floral print. pick one color out of that print that u love and decorate the rest of kitchen with it. eg., rugs, towels, S&P shakers etc....

eg: my kitchen - i have LC cookware in 'flame'... i love the color, so my S&P shakers, cruet set and teapot are "flame"...you don't need a lot, just some pieces to tie it all together.

sprtphntc7a thank you I just feel I’m all over the map trying to match things to my counters!!! Backsplash that I can’t stay focused on what matches!!! I think I need to find art work and go from there!! This is why I hate to make changes it’s so overwhelming to me lol thanks for your help!

Pick up the red from your chair and run with it. You need color in there and red is the perfect accent color.

Leaning towards one of these for wall art what do you all think?

really any warm color will go with your counters, they read 'brown' from afar, so 'warm' palette. reds, earthy greens, darker yellows/golds, oranges etc...

i would pull in a color from your family room since they seem to be close to one another.

the second one is perfect!!! reads 'warm'....it gives you tons of choices to add layers with. i would go with the red since your chair is red & it will tie it together.

i agree with cpartist, you need color in the kitchen!!

first pic is 'cool', so i would say no that one. and blah to me... sorry :(

    Hi Kim,

Both art pieces you selected are quite nice. I can mock them up tomorrow if you’d like?

i don’t necessarily agree that you need to use warm colors. I think you can use whatever art piece/fabric you like as a Jumping off point, as long as it ties to your family room in one way or another.

Have a a good night everyone :) talk tomorrow!
