Shrub Roses for thick border

Zone 7A Northern VA. Making a border along pool edge that is 40ft long by 5ft wife. Planting box woods along edge between roses and pool patio. I will plant 2 or three roses together to give a more full look. Thinking each grouping should be anywhere from 8 to 10 feet apart. Suggestions on this?

I want to know which type of rose will give me a full shrub look? David Austin, Kordes, something else? I have two Kordes roses from a big box store and no matter how I prune they are super spindly. Obviously, as disease resistant and maintenance free the better. More my primary goal is the look. If you have specific suggestions please give them.
Pics attached for reference.

Regarding shape, I think that's mainly a function of the variety rather than the breeder. My Kordes Dark Desire is very tall and spindly, while Summer Romance is full and bushy, regardless of how I prune either. How tall do you want the hedge? Does it back onto a fence of some sort on which you could grow climbers and have some shorter roses in front?

I have found Olivia Austin and ancient mariner to be very pleasing shapes for me . Olivia is very very healthy. I know I have one other in mind , just talked this past week about how nice it was and I have all ready forgot! Lol

Souvenir de la Malmaison and its sports, Souvenir de St. Anne's and Kronprinzessin Viktoria.

It's the large bush on the right which blooms constantly for me. It has, as you can see, a nice round and busy appearance. No disease for me, but my climate is not humid.

Oh good to know about the Kordes. So if description says bushy it more then likely will be?

As for the back side.... where I will be planting is on the top portion of a retaining wall. So pool then 5’ of level space then rock retaining wall that drops the ground level about 3 ft. The retaining wall does come up about 6in or so higher then the pool ground level. So there is a bit of a block. But also no wear to grow climbers. Hope that all made sense.

Our summers in Northern Virginia can be super hot and humid. We have major problems with rust but also mildew and other funguses. I would prefer to only need to spray in spring and fall if at all possible.

    Radler roses.

Double pink knockout does make a very attractive Bush and it has some fragrance as well. Search on this form. There was a woman in I think Northern Ohio that grew it in front of her house and it was spectacular. I have a small one so I can't comment yet.

Pink pet is also bulletproof here in Cincinnati and makes a nice bush.

Zaid is also nice but may need to be planted more closely at as it is taller and narrower.

Ill second Olivia rose from David Austin here also and Earth Angel Angel by Kordes. If you want lots of color and flower power with health, you can’t beat the knockouts like vapor suggested. I think the Austin’s and other classes just aren’t as common around my area so they are more interesting to me right now, but certainly require a lot more care.

Oh yes it was earth angel !! Thanks dianela for jolting my memory. It does take a break in between bloom cycles but the shape is really nice , minus a few canes that shoot up . Your pool area sounds lovel y, don’t be afraid to post photos so maybe we can help more .

For a white rose, Bolero has a really nice bushy shape. I also recommend Olivia Austin...the shape of the bush is so nice and the foliage is really full and lush. I think I may plant a long hedge of Olivias somewhere in my garden.

vaporvac...do you grow Zaide? I just got 3 from Palantine. If I decide to plant them together, how close do you think they should be?

I do grows Zaid! Mine decided they want to be climbers! But I'm going to cut them back next year they're still in a pot so I can't really judge but I'm going to say they could be kind of tall. I really love this Rose is it blooming all the time and is very fragrant and beautiful color. I posted some pictures on another post I'll see if I can remember which one it is.

If you grow Double Pink Knock Out, the most "elegant" rose in the Knock Out Series (if it's possible for a Knock Out rose to look elegant?), you will have the easiest to grow and care for rose you could possibly grow. Take a look at the bush shots and individual flower shots of Double Pink Knock Out on Help Me Find Roses and at the images tab on a word search, and tell me that it isn't beautiful. It's your best choice, and I am unanimous in my opinion! :•)

Red Double Knock Out is as nice, too. Either color is great. All the other Knock Outs in the series are lacklustre, except for Blushing Knock Out, whose semi double flower has great charm. The bush form of Blushing Knock Out is not tailored, a little leggy, and the flower production is not as heavy as in the Pink or Red Double Knock Outs.

Check out all these Knock Outs I recommended and see for yourself. Make your border a snap to care for, not a chore.

In Northern Virginia you are at 'Ground Zero' for black spot pressure. Do you want to have to spray your roses with the spray drift landing in your swimming pool? You will have no black spot issues with a Knock Out.

I've seen photos of the Buck roses Earth Song and Carefree Beauty as nice shrubby, rounded bushes. The same for the Kordes rose Cream Veranda. All three of these are known for being very healthy.

What did you have in mind as far as shrub size goes?

So I had an email from Spring Hill Nursery about their 'sale' on 5 of their assorted shrub roses they call "Freedom Roses". Does anyone know or have experience with this particular shrub rose.

I've seen the Red Freedom....not impressed.

Been reading a million posts, so don’t recall who, but someone made a hedge of Belinda’s Dream.

Also wanted to share that I just nabbed a beautiful Zaide from a nearby Lowes.

    Love Zaid.

Wow Belinda's Dream would be a beautiful hedge. I saw a hedge of Rose de Rescht once in a photo somewhere...it was lovely.

    @Kristine - your Julia's look great!

Julia Child is a very good rose. Super healthy here & we have black spot issues here as well, but she stays clean. Her size varies greatly depending on climate. But she has a nice shape overall. That's if you like yellow.

If you were to give a few more suggestions as to colours you really love or want, you could get a more narrowed done lists from posters.

I have a number of Austin roses & Kordes. Some are healthier here than others. They also have varying growth patterns depending on variety.
