Can Anyone Identify These???

I got these from a seller on EBay...and from Lowes. The first 3 pics. the smaller one, is suppose to be 'Blue Dragon', it obviously isn't. I bought it as a dormant caudex for $20. The seller told me it was 'Blue Dragon', and cut off all conversation. I got it a year ago, this is its 4th bloom cycle, it isn't 'Blue Dragon'. Any idea who it might be??

The other one, starting with the plain single pink bloom picture, I don't know if that is a named variety either. It is a big one from Lowes. It is in a 3 gallon pot, BIG plant for $15. It has like 3 varieties all grafted onto the caudex, this one bloom is the reason I bought it. It is the smallest part, of course! BUT the prettiest flower. The pink/yellow bloom with red veins in it, is the one I am trying to identify. It also has a soft slightly fuzzy underside. is that odd?? All the other leaves on it are smooth. Any ideas on who it could be, would be great to know.

There are 3 varieties on it. The 3rd hasn't bloomed yet. So...any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you. I got another one at Lowes, that is called 'Pink Diamond'....it is 95% Pink diamond. So that one is ok.

The flowers on Adenium can be unstable. By that I mean the seeds produced during pollination often look nothing like either parents. Additionally the flowers on a plant can change from year to year and from bloom cycle to bloom cycle. Because there are SOOO MANY crosses and hybrids identification of specific flowers is often not possible. Just enjoy them when they bloom.

I believe that your fuzzy Adenium is Adenium arabicum. I have one too and the leaves are positively velvety.

Edited to add: Wait a minute! PoohBearlvr? I don’t have my glasses on so missed the name at first. I remember you from when I first joined GW. You already know EVERYTHING I said in my first paragraph. Apologies. I didn’t see who I was talking to.

I know everything?? News to me:) My adeniums are suppose to have been bloomed to prove it was 'Blue Dragon, a 'carnation' type red bloom with a thin blue edge. It is far from a seedling when I bought it. That's the first 3 pics. It is suppose to be 'Blue Dragon'. The seller on EBay just wouldn't send me a real Blue Dragon, and the other 2 I got from him at the same time are also not what I bought. one has blooms that wont open, they get stuck and rot before opening, and the other is close to the one I bought, but the other two rarely TRY to bloom,so i couldn't post pics.

The one from Lowes, maybe the simple pink bloom might be 'Arabicum', I dont know the name of the pink/yellow one with the red veins in it. With the fuzzy leaves. Since the other big one I bought at Lowes had the name tag of 'Pink Diamond on it, I know its name, and the entire plant is one variety. But this big one with 3-4 stems grafted on it,it a puzzle. All of my big adeniums are named, my little ones that I have had for years, are just red or white or pink or mini red etc....simple ones.

You know everything she said in her first paragraph is what was said. Not you know everything. Just sayin.

Well i don't know adeniums to be unstable. IF you get as 'proven bloomer', grafted onto a caudex, it is suppose to bloom as promised. I got several 'proven' bloomers...named varietys, and they are NOT what i bought. IF they were from seed, they could be anything.

BUT a graft that came from a 'proven named variety', should be what you bought and paid for... right??? I really paid a lot for a 'Blue Dragon', and I got an unknown one, and it is frankly a dud to me. i want a 'blue Dragon SO badly and cant get one. I got the one in the first 3 pictures. Someone else might like it. But I dont.

The Blue Dragon is beautiful, along with the 3 others I bought ,all of which didnt turn out to be what I paid for. All duds.

I want a Blue Dragon badly!! I paid for that. And the seller should give me one. It took 4 months for it to bloom from dormancy, by that time on EBay, the seller isn't bound to replace a 'mistake'. But he never accepted as a mistake. He refused to identify it, and would not talk to me. So I am asking in here if it can be identified. And the ones from Lowes can be named. I like the one from Lowes a lot more!! and it was only $15, and its huge!!!

That’s frustrating. Especially when you thought that FINALLY you had gotten what you’d been searching for and waited so long for the bloom only to have it look nothing like what was advertised. Can you post a picture of what Blue Dragon is supposed to look like?

I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times with so called proven bloomers. I had hoped that the difference in what I had purchased and what the bloom actually looked like was due to environment or culture or just transitioning from their old home to their new one. Or a subsequent bloom cycle that year or the next would show a true bloom.

    NOPE.

Yea, I hear ya there. Not much we can do though. It does suck. Cant beat $15 though. The last one I bought about 25 years ago was $140. Its doing great and was what I asked for. The web site shows pics of the plants and you pic the one you want.

Hi Poohbear I’m not taking up for the eBay seller but where you live may be a different climate than the seller and that can make a differents in the color of your Adenium the heat and humidity makes a difference in color I’ve bought plants in Houston Texas that I seen bloom there in a high humidity and not bloom the same where I live with a very low humidity but buying off eBay is not a good place to buy also what and how often you feed your plants makes a difference I guess what I’m trying to say is you may never get a Adenium with any blue in it I would look around locally and see if anybody close to you have any with blue in them or somewhere that may match your climate

Well the sales on Ebay are suppose to be the ones that they are selling. But all 3 of mine, bloomed and I got the shaft on all 3. Didn't get any fantastic double/carnation like blooms ,like I paid for. 'Blue Dragon' was the biggest let down. When i expected a double red with a blue line around the petals, and I got the one pictured above,....it was a BIG let down.

Seems like the only really pretty/affordable ones, are in Thailand, and IF they dont bloom as shown, the chance of any refund or replacement is SLIM. And it takes weeks to arrive in the mail. So...if they arrive alive is a gamble.

I get flower seeds from Thailand and Sri-Lanka, no problem, but adeniums?? I wouldn't take the chance. Hell the US adenium seller screwed me over. So, Thailand will probably do the same:(

'KatieDolittle'....I expected an unusual/rare cross 'Blue Dragon', with 'Double Red petals and a thin Blue border', ( the border is like a DEEP purple, or violet. So it isn't 'blue', I get that. But it is suppose to have a 'sticktite' border, a different color, like in African violets.

What I got, is that pinkish/reddish bloom above. It is FARRR different. Not the same variety at all. Nothing to do with my area. I know they can vary a BIT. Mine other adeniums bloom slightly different. If I buy a yellow bloomer, I expect a yellow bloom. If I buy a double red with a 'blue border' I expect that. Or close to it. I know REAL 'blue' doesn't exist. But not a totally different color, like I got. Just asking if anyone knows the variety. So far, nope.

Now I cant buy it....not for sale this year. Maybe some other growers sells it, but I dont want to spend another $25-30 to TRY and get it. Why should I buy another? I don't have adenium stores around the corner, to buy exotic colors in Ft.laud. So Ebay is about the only place to buy them. Except Thailand.

It has nothing to do with my region/fert/or water.

The seller told me it was 'Blue Dragon', but there is no similarity to it, in THOSE blooms. It is a totally different variety.

Unfortunately, One of the problems w buying off of ebay. Especially when it comes to color choice. Exception w yours in it being a completely different color. Many of the sellers Photoshop photo's and those that only want to make a sale.

Always bought mine from Rinoa of Taiwan (Orient Adeniums). Colors may have been off slightly due to humidity and first blooming. Otherwise, Spot on.

"I get flower seeds from Thailand and Sri-Lanka, no problem, but adeniums?? I wouldn't take the chance. Hell the US adenium seller screwed me over. So, Thailand will probably do the same:("

Seeds would be a crap shoot no matter from whom you purchased them. Not the fault of the grower/seller (unless they are selling bogus seeds). Even selfing a "Blue Dragon" is not going to give you seeds that are true. The atypical colors one sees in any of the adeniums which deviate from the "boring" standard types are the results of mutations/odd gene assortments. Essentially, one is looking at the same problem one gets between hybrids ... there is no guarantee that the offspring will look much like either parent.

    last modified: 7 years ago

They have made leaps and bounds in the cultivation of new adenium hybrids. It is a science of genetics and not all mutations etc. as you speak. The percentages are far better than they where many years ago when Pink was the predominant color in the gene pool. Thank you to those such as David Clulow, Mark Dimmitt, Ko Chi Lung, etc. for their efforts and expertise.

Seeds of many different genus do not come true to seed and it is a given that the Adeniums will not be as it's pod and pollen parent.

Sound as though you have been burnt, but to group all Adeniums growers/sellers from Thailand or other as dishonest or misleading is not a fair assumption. Just the wrong ones that you where in contact with and made purchases from. This forum/site (Adeniums) has made many contacts with very good sellers from abroad and many have received wonderful Adeniums.

Not that it is unexpected for you to be upset or disillusioned by your experiences, just unaware of the good ones.

    Sorry for this,

    Rick

Mutations are part of genetics, my friend. ;-) TtBoMK, wild adeniums do not show much color variation -- certainly not to the large extent the domestic ones do. (If I am incorrect, please do let me know and post some pics if you can. Would be really neat to see wild types with coloration of many of the hybrids.) Separation and genesis of some of those colors seen in hybridized plants could very well be due to mutations -- including incomplete separation of genes or mixing of genes on chromosomes.

These are NOIDS (No ID) - Lowes gets their adeniums from Florida. I forget the grower's name off hand but one of their employees sometimes posts in this forum. He said all of their plants they ship to Lowes are from their own seed stock and none of them are named varieties.

It is not a matter of proving or showing Adeniums Wild as you speak of. Most of that is and has been shown and proven by Taxonomists that have knowledge and the expertise in the field. The color or variation of Adeniums in Natural habitat is not for me to have to prove to you or anyone. It's a given.

I believe it was spoken here of a particular Adenium (hybrid) not received as expected. These are cultivated hybrids and whether there is any possible mutations, I am sure the individuals studying and producing the hybrids are well aware of.

its cosa or costa or something like that, that ships to lowes. Not for me. May as well pick up a bag of miracle grow soil while your there. lol

    PoohBearLvr thanked abrahamx

I get soil at Lowes to. Where do you get sterile good cactus soil?

Well cheap BIG blooming adeniums, that are GRAFTED onto BIG caudexs. Some with 3-4 different varieties on it, for only $14 is a deal!!

AND they grow and bloom all year here in Fla:) I bought my others as NAMED AND BLOOMED and PROVEN grafts, and they are not what I paid for.

Am I the only one that wants what I pay for and expected???

Thus my 'Velvet Constellation' looks like 'Velvet Constellation',...not something else. My 'Good Night', a well known variety,... that is suppose to be 'deep purple/black', is really a deep blood red in person, in the pictures it is lighter and has an edge on it. BUT I like it anyway. But it isn't a deep purple/black as promised. But it is pretty. Still want a deep purple one!!! Cant find one.

SO....when YOU all are buying adeniums, for $50, and it is a grafted plant...do you expect to get the blooms as described or in the pictures?? Or no?

It is suppose to be what you saw in the catalog and description...right?? Well... I bought 3 plants that didnt bloom as I was shown. Wouldn't you be upset and like to know what you got??

I dont care/know about 'mutants'. These are 'PROVEN' blooms. That is the point. So the sellers can sell the newest color/form.

So you should get what the picture/description says. Thats how the adenium growers sell the new ones, and charge so much for them. I have YET to get my deep purple one, or my other unique ones. I got all these plain ones.

The ones from Lowes, I just thought MIGHT have names. 1 had a the tag on it. 'Pink Diamond' and I like it. For a BIG plant/shrub, for only $14 it is a deal! And the one with 3 different varietys on it, is cool!! Just wanted to know the names. But if not, it is still a deal!!

Sorry I cant buy from private sellers/growers/collectors, and have the genealogy report in front of me. I don't care. I just want what I am promised to get. Sell me purple, I want purple. Sell me plain old white, I want plain old white. Easy.

How YOU ALL buy yours?? You never buy on EBay or online from Thailand??

I got mine from big growers in Calif. Dormant 3-4 yo plants, with proven grafts on them. To produce the color I paid for. Simple. But I got something else.

So..how do you all buy adeniums, to get the exact color, or variety you want??

WHEW! I hear you PBL. I most definitely want what I pay for, too! I was disappointed with those I purchased from overseas. Also with one I bought on eBay. The only one I’ve been totally 100% happy with is my Adenium multiflorum. That is the ONLY one that even bloomed for me at all last season. Where I live they don’t bloom year round. At least MINE don’t. So with hardly any blooms last year, blooms not as advertised, very particular temperature requirements and boring most of the year...well, that’s why I moved on to expand my cacti & other succulents. Not as difficult, little risk of freezing, interest year round & some Summer AND Winter growers.

PoohBearLvr thanked SoCal Stewart (San Diego, Ca Zone 10A/10B)

Thank you for your backing up my opinion on buying!! I don't know why you don't get blooms year round in your area. It is like Fla. Except maybe with cooler times in winter.

But hardly cold. This 'multiflourm' thing is what I don't get. I assume it is a specie?? I always buy hybrids. with big big flowers, and names.

I have a few of the single simple one color types. I have great getting blooms from the double/carnation types.

With the exception of those 3 that I bought, and I didn't get the color I expected.

The big full double bloomers, bloom all year round.

Try one of them and pot it up in a BIG pot, or in the yard. As long as you have 'cactus' soil or fast draining soil, and lots of heat and light, they bloom all year. San Diego is like Ft.Laud. isnt it?? Sunny and hot?

Hot & sunny in the Summer & Fall. We get temps in the 30’s & 40’s. Several of them this Winter and LOTS of rain. More rain & days in the low to mid 30’s this Winter than I can ever remember and I’ve lived here for over 50 years. I have to bring the Adenium inside around Thanksgiving. None of them are planted in the ground. Maybe I’ll try one though. Just to see what happens. It would definitely be an experiment and I’d have to see which one I’d be willing to sacrifice. Who knows. Maybe I’d be pleasantly surprised.

PoohBearLvr thanked SoCal Stewart (San Diego, Ca Zone 10A/10B)

...and yes. I think Adenium multiflorum is a ...species.? ...variety? Like obesum or arabicum. Not sure what the proper scientific terminology is.

PoohBearLvr thanked SoCal Stewart (San Diego, Ca Zone 10A/10B)

i dont know what to call them either. I buy what i like, and pray for a name. i think they are species. But if the roots on your are very tightly potbound, that might be the problem with yours. I know once I pot up or plant an adenium into the ground, they take of growing and bloom like crazy!!! It is colder in your area....than mine. They do love HEAT. If you put one in the ground, just wrap a sheet around it, or newspaper, when it is cold, and it will be ok. But below 40-45 they die....right?

Or try a BIG pot and see what happens. You seem to have more knowledge than me about adeniums, so you must have ones in big pots now. Right?? How are they doing??

It is obvious that many have been disappointed and/or put off with their purchased from abroad. Unless you are able to buy a plant "in person" that is in bloom, unfortunately there is the chance of it not being exactly as shown.

It is not a matter of not agreeing with you on your misfortune, but I have purchased atleast 20+ grafted plants from Rinoa (Orient Adeniums) whom anyone can buy plants from and all have been exemplary and some even more so than what she had shown in advertised photo's.

Possibly things have changed with purchasing from Rinoa, but I could not say for over the last year.

You are correct wanting what you see in an advertised photo, but buying w/o seeing is and will always be a risk one takes.

I hope that there are some honest and trustworthy sellers out there.

Rcharles I bought all 3 of my 'named and proved bloomed' adeniums from a grower in Calif. At $19 plus $9 shipping for EACH, off of Ebay. 3yo dormant grafted plants. By the time they bloomed, so i could see the blooms promised, the 'money back warranty' through EBay was gone. It took 4 months to get the first blooms. They only cover you for 3 months to get a refund from a crooked seller. And as I said, the seller could not care less. Considering these are named and well known varietys, they should bloom as promised. 'Good Night is in wide distribution, and most adenium lovers know it flowers...right?? Well I got the deep red bloom, not the deep purple bloom I was promised, and this one is known to have a deep purple bloom, right? My 'Velvet Constellation' bloomed as promised, as shown in my other adenium pictures. but as the main point of tHIS post was...my 'Blue Dragon' is FAR from a deep red with a thin purple/'blue ' border. It is the washed out pink bloom above. to this day i just want a deep purple/double blooming, maybe even a single bloom, adenium ...and cant get one:(

Katiedolittle if that is a purple bloom i am interested. it looks like it has purple on the outer petals. Is that right?

Yes, w ebay/Paypal that is the unfortunate thing and especially if we are talking 3 mths or longer to really see what you are getting.

You should try "Lucky Sumo Adeniums" (Robert McKee) in Florida. Robert has been growing and starting Adeniums for many years and he is so helpful and knowledgeable.

I hope you gave a negative feedback to the seller you used.

The seller sent me 'healthy dormant plants' with tags on them with pics. of the blooms I excepted. So I left them positive feedback.

So I would get the same. 4 moths later, (that is FAST to get blooms from dormancy, I assume.) And of course I couldn't change my feedback after I saw what I got.
