Preventing windows getting ocean salt damage

We’ve been thinking of creating a loft area, where we will gain a water view when adding windows. My biggest issue is salt from the ocean/air, has pitted and stained our existing (1st floor) windows that cannot be cleaned no matter what I’ve tried. I see some newer waterfront homes with huge glass windows that don’t appear to be affected by the salt. Is there something we can do to repair/clean those we have and to look for when choosing new windows? Thank you!!

The damage done to your existing windows is done, you are not fixing or repairing salt intrusion. They were probably older mill finish aluminum windows. Todays windows are either anodized or powder coated (preferable to anodized). The powder coated units of today stand up much better (provided you get a minimum of the AAMA2605 finish). Also make sure the hardware is the marine rated stainless steel hardware.

Thank you, Millworkman. Our existing windows are about 10 years old, but when they were chosen, no one was probably aware of salt issues. I will be sure whenever we purchase new ones (or replace any of our older ones) we specifically request the right quality!! I appreciate your reply.

Painted / Powder Coated would be a more durable finish than anodized for a waterfront application. Just make certain that the AAMA2605 finish is what they use. Anodized finishes can get a little cruddy depending on the amount of salt water intrusion.
