How do you calculate the square footage of subway tiles needed for a kitchen backsplash? Is there a formula?

Good morning Vicki,

Typically you multiply the length times the height of the area you are covering. Standard rule is that you order 10% more for waste (cutting to fit). For example, if the entire length of your backsplash is 10 feet and it is 2 feet high that you want to cover with tile; It would be 2 x 10= 20. Then 20 x .10=2 for the waste. 20 + 2=22 total square feet. That is a general standard market rule. If you have more cuts, corners, outlets, and other items around which you need to cut you might want to accommodate some more. Hope that makes sense. If not, please let me know.

Just measured and my height is 15” so do I round up to 2’ ? Im horrible at Math☹️

One foot is 12", so that would be 3" remaining. 3/12=.25. So 15" would be 1.25 feet height. You would not need to round that up. You would then just multiply that by the total length of the wall(s) you will be covering. Hope that makes sense. No problem. :-)
