A pretty full length mirror where painting is.

I love the painting there. I think it would great if you painted that side of the column black so the top and bottom edges of the painting would get lost against the paint. That's despite the fact that I'm not a fan of feature walls generally, and I question whether one really wants to try to make a feature of a structural column. But I do think it would flatter the art, and I really like the painting.

I think it would be beautiful wrapped in shiplap with a slightly smaller picture hung on top of the shiplap. Another thought would be to wrap 3 side in shiplap and frame out the side facing the refrigerator and then use chalkboard paint there to write on. If you go with a chalkboard side, you could also hang sheetmetal and paint that with chalkboard paint to have a magnetic chalkboard surface in the kitchen depending on your needs.

I wouldn’t do mirrors as that reminds me of a department store ;)

Nothing. I would leave it unadorned.

And I certainly wouldn’t add anything to attract attention to it ( such as wood, tile or whatever ).

Too big! Leave it naked or try a smaller art piece that is 60% to 75% of the width of your column. It's a lovely space, you don't need to make this column a feature by cladding it in anything.

I agree with RL and K Laurence to leave it as it is, the same color as your other walls.

If you hate it plain, maybe a big potted plant there would do something for you. The art piece is too large; there's no border of wall around it.

I vote for leaving it empty, especially since it's near the entry and it's basically just a structural necessity. Let your visitors see the whole room first, not the column.

Leave it as it is; it's an architectural feature which doesn't need any adornment, and anything on it looks wrong. No shiplap or other stuff, please; it truly is fine as it is.

This is all about proportion. The art you had in one shot is way too wide and stubby in height. A super tall, super skinny mirror could work. Or a series of 3 really skinny smallish items stacked vertically. Or nothing. I like to play around with things until it just feels right. If the column is 3’ wide x 8’ tall you want something that is no wider than 1’ wide and a minimum of 4’ tall. That will give the wall (column) the presence it needs as a backdrop to something. Hope that makes sense.

Looking at your other shots you do have room to place something also kind of skinny and tall to the right of the entry door. Maybe that’s better for a mirror.

Leave it naked.

There is no color in that house, it is a sea of gray. The purple flower art is too big, too wide for that spot. Looks like you have other larger wall areas where art, similar to what you can see on the far walls, can go. If you plan to leave those larger areas blank, then I like the idea of smaller art or smaller art stacked vertically to be hung on that column. Perhaps choose something that can pick up the colors of your other art. If you plan to place art on those now empty walls, leave the column bare.

I would definitely put something a little bit narrower there--let the column breathe. But not something deliberately tall and skinny; that makes it look like you bought something to fit the space rather than having found a space for a favorite piece.

I have a similar issue...random post in the middle of the room. I use it to be a backdrop for something...bar cart, demi lune table...some kind of surface. It gives the post another purpose. :)

Another vote for nudity. Adding decor there looks too contrived to me. Just let it be a nekkid column.
