Knobs on top glass cabinets or not?

We are just about finished with our kitchen. Our last decision is whether to put knobs on the upper glass cabinets. They do open, but we don't anticipate using them beyond displaying some decorative items. We keep getting mixed opinions, please help!

Yes - knobs for sure. Otherwise it just looks like a square glass display type box. The knobs will complete the look. Pretty kitchen, good job!

    Yes to knobs.

    Agreed, yes on knobs

Yes to knobs on the top. But, what if they were crystal knobs? I see that your pendant lights are brass but are the other pulls on your cupboards brass as well? I can't tell from the photo.

I'm wondering if something like this knob might be nice. They are very pretty when you look up close, but more likely to disappear as well which may be satisfying since you are wondering if you want knobs at all. Of course, if your other hardware is pewter colour, or ORB, then the backing on the crystal should match it. I think it might be nice with the glass doors and the fact that you plan to use the uppers for display.

You already have square knobs, I would repeat that shape. Either what your other upper doors have, or a small crystal one. The stacked glass uppers look unfinished without hardware. Beautiful kitchen!

Yes to knobs on the glass upper cabinets.

Beautiful space, however I’m the odd man out, or woman to be politically correct, I would NOT put the knobs. My suggestion is to move into the space and see how it feels. Such a quick fix later if you decide you want them.

I’m with Sandra. No knobs for now. Right now they look exactly what they are intended to be - a display cabinet.

Yes to knobs--looks naked to me. Also, beautiful kitchen and love your pendants!

Just saw this in HGTV....no knobs!

And how do you open that little door? Open the lower door first, climb up so you can use the bottom to pull it open? Or does it have a push open system?

I don’t have as many as you do, but we did knobs.

How do you open them without knobs? I have a vision of a woman laying on her back in her kitchen after falling of the step stool after attempting to pry open one of the doors thinking to herself, "Maybe we need knobs on those cabinets."

I like the square glass knobs that Buckeye posted, but I would live with it for awhile as is ..

In our last house, our cabinet maker erroneously put knobs on two cabinets above the range that were supposed to appear as part of the hood. After he removed them and fixed the holes, he installed push latches so that the cabinets could be opened. I tend to think knobs would appear “busy” in your space.

    Yes to knobs on top.

the uppers have a different front and size which sets them apart imo. no knobs.

No knobs. They are basically display cabinets not to be opened daily. If a year or so from now you feel they look "naked" or like they're missing something, you can always add them.

Don't need knobs. Add them if the nakedness bothers you. Totally optional. Looks fine either way.

I have a second row of cabinets over some of mine and they don't have knobs, nor do the ones over the hood. I don't get into them often and when I do, it's easy enough to pull them open once the door beneath is opened. For something you rarely get into, knobs are not needed.

I did latches on my 1925 house (upper doors only).

I think the advice to wait sounds good. You can always add them later if you like. All that matters is what looks good to you.

Yes 13. No or wait 9.

Got a coin handy? PS the answers confused me enough that I'm voting "present".

Thank you all for your help!

Sorry to comment off topic but would you mind sharing what you used for your backsplash? Your kitchen is gorgeous!

To shopsissy, thank you! The tile is Walker Zanger Cafe in the London Fog color. Hope this helps!

I think your kitchen is lovely without, but if in a year you want something, latches would be fun!!

@The Kitchen Place would you please share your pulls, latches and hardware sources? Thank you!!

Neither design choice is wrong, but if you do not have knobs on them you need to have push latches installed.

I would have thought that glass cabinets are only a decorative element if you didn't say otherwise. Yes, a definite yes to the knobs there.

  • PRO

Yes, you could put knobs there, but I don't think they are necessary. Cabinets look great like this as well. If you decide to put knobs, maybe you should look into some that aren't very noticeable, like the ones mvcanada and lucky998877 posted above. By the way, gorgeous kitchen, congratulations!

I would LOVE to know where you got those island pendants! LOVE THEM!!!

And, no, we are not doing knobs on our glass uppers either. Like the "Display Case" look. Super clean ;-)

    I am doing knobs personally.

They look fine without to me. For what it’s worth I have glass cabinets above my uppers with awning doors. Although I do have handles on mine… I haven’t ever opened them …lol.

I'm redoing my kitchen. Like your paint colors. What is the white cabinet color and also the island paint color?

I used Jeffrey Alexander Latch in Polished Nickel. The turn latch can lock in place to always "open", no need to turn it to open. I have these in my butler's pantry too. Love them. I bought thru my Hardware Resources account but now there are many online resellers of this. Item code is CL101-NI polished nickel. They come in a couple other finishes.

@Tammy Sartwell Sorry I just saw your question. The handles are also Jeffrey Alexander in the Belcastel design, 128mm length in the polished nickel finish (NI).

Beautiful kitchen! No to the knobs.

Thank you! The cabinets are Benjamin Moore Decorators White and island is Benjamin Moore Blue Note.

Definitely add knobs to the top cabinets ... even if they're "just display", you need to be able to open them. They don't look quite right /don't look like real cabinets without knobs.

I love the look of crystal knobs, but I'd want them to match what you already have. No to square knobs ... they can "spin" instead of staying still. Well, round knobs can spin too, but they don't look wrong when they do it.

We have the same set up in our home which is currently being built. I think this way, no knobs if being used only for display but if you were going to use them as regular cabinets then you would add knobs. I think now it looks a bit naked but once we put out display items into the space and light them it will look fabulous.

We don’t have as many as you, but I did do knobs on our top cabinet glass-front doors, and I think it gives a finished and cozy feel. I also like that it breaks up the white.

Ugh, just saw this is an old post and OP’s kitchen is long-since done.
