Kitchen paint color help

last modified: 7 years ago

I just repainted my cabinets, put up a travertine tile backsplash and a glass backsplash behind my range area. I need help picking out a paint color. I was going to go with a warm sage green color. My husband said today that he likes yellow in kitchens. Well we already have yellow and I wanted to go with something different. But if I did go yellow again I would do like a warm butter yellow. We are currently waiting for our range hood vent to come in which is a slim line style stainless steel with a black accent face. I also will be changing out the lighting, window treatment and getting a new fridge but for now I need help on the paint. Any suggestions would be helpful. I definitely want to stay away from beiges and white.

    ..aren't you forgetting something?

Did you bring home paint chips?

Sorry, took me some time to figure out how to attach pictures. Yes, I took home paint chips but they're so small it's hard to visualize.

Yes, I do intend on changing out the window treatment and was going to go with an inset. Right now it's temporary. The counters are a mess since everything is a WIP since I'm doing it all on my own while working and keeping up with family. The microwave will be removed as well. I do like the pearl color but was hoping to stay away from beiges and white. Why do you say to stay away from sage? It's actually called white sage. It's a very pale sage. I thought some color contrast would look nice. Just wondering your thoughts.

could you post a picture of that color? many brands have that name. If you could bring home a sample and try it out, we'd have a better idea. I like the bottom one best.

I do like a green w/your cabinet color, but if it's 'too' green it's going to fight w/all of your other tones and tile selection.

BM Lacey Pearl and ORB knobs

    BM Cappuccino Froth
I really like this selection. plays well w/your travertine since it has a slight pinkinsh undertone.

Very hard to imagine the sage color because that yellow is so overpowering next to the mosaic tile. Is there any way you could paint that soffit over the range a creamy color that I posted? lets see how a neutral looks.

then get your sage samples and try it. painting the green over the yellow is going to throw off your sample color. try and get a base neutral color first.

BTW, do you need a new light?

It's from Pittsburgh Paint - it's called White Sage. When I bring up the color swatch on my computer it comes up looking gray but I have a paint swatch of it and it's a very pale green (at least I think so). Yes, I also need new lighting which is something else I'm considering as well. Lighting absolutely stinks in my kitchen. My husband is against LED lighting for various reasons so LED is absolutely out for lighting. He was talking about putting in recessed lights similar to what we have over our breakfast bar area right now but that hasn't been decided. I posted pictures of that area as well. Please don't judge on that God awful light in my eating area - 1980's style LOL. I still have to purchase a new refrigerator and move my microwave too.

I agree the yellow is throwing it off and I think that's why it's been so hard for me to imagine a nice color. You're right to paint the soffit over the range area the creamy color - maybe I'll try the BM capp froth as the base. I'll do that tomorrow in fact and I'll post pictures once I get the base color up. And also maybe I'll get samples of the lighter sage colors and paint some swatches of that on the base.

I'm only going off the monitor look of the color, so if you don't think it works in person, find something that's close.

I think continuing the recessed lights would be best. If you like, have a pendant over the sink area.

As for the bulbs, kitchen lighting should be in the 4000K range. anything below 3200 and the light turns very yellow. not what you want while you're working. Your husband may be thinking of the very cool LED lighting that looks almost blue. I have recessed LED lights in my kitchen and love them. it's a nice, bright white, but not too white. Get a few of the bulbs in the 4000K range and try them out. (you can always return them)

you could keep the center light if you like it but do something in a ORB or nickel

    for over your dining table, maybe;

Wow, those light fixtures are awesome. I've been struggling with that as well but put it to the side since I figured painting would be my next step. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll head out to the home improvement store tomorrow for the paint. Can't wait to see my options right in front of me. I'll post them.

Curious... do you know where I can view info on these lights and this window treatment? I like these the best.

    Thanks again!

G Marie. for the ceiling light, you'll want to search "semi flush mount light". try Lampsplus, or Lampsplusopenbox for really great deals.

    This is Dailey from Wayfair

the other one w/the mother of pearl looking tiles is Eddington 4 light semi flush mount. (no source) I don't know about the modern looking one, but this one is from Lumens and it's 'Kirklan'.

as for the blinds, the white louvre ones look like Silhouettes or Pirouettes (if you search those names you'll find links) try Blinds.com as well. I had those white Silhouettes years ago and loved them. They're really nice blinds.

There are actually 5 colors on the wall now (soffit). One of which is the base color which was painted over the yellow that was there. There are 4 shades of green. I already know which shade of the green appeals to me most. Which do you think is the best color to use?

maybe the far right or far left? is the far right white sage?

The far left is white sage actually. it came out almost a blueish color next to all of them. The green colors from left to right are... white sage, light sage, pale pine and with a twist.

Light sage is way too dark and white sage is way too light. I was originally thinking about going with, with a twist but it reminded me of a baby's room - very pastel green. I was leaning more towards pale pine.
