$8 a square foot is not enough for site finished hardwood in my area. Talk to a good local flooring shop.

That number looks high for a builder after they chisel/hammer and beat the supplier over the head.

"We have a lot of work for you if you hit the sweet spot (right price)"

However it's also about location. The ones mentioned probably fall into the decent category.

I got Mirage engineered pre-finished floors for $8.00 per square foot. They were Red Oak but their Select and Better line which was more expensive than their Exclusive as it was less "busy".

I researched quite a bit and Mirage floors were well reviewed in terms of their wear layer as well as the finish. They are a Canadian company.

This price didn't include installation of course so my final cost with installation - which needed loads of prep including self leveling; cork and plywood was closer to $18 per square foot.
