I know people favor larger pieces of artwork, but this works! A large painting over that cabinet would draw the eye too high.

Although it is small you have done a great job of balancing it with other objects that ground it (the cabinet), hanging it low and surrounding it with other objects that add visual weight (plants with height). My only suggestion is to get rid of the two matching candle votives and add two differing objects. The matching is throwing off the grouping of three on the left.

thank you for all your advice. I would love to work with what i have. just trying to figure if i can.

I would still add one more element to the left. Having two groupings of two feels off. Grouping (at least on one side) with an odd number creates more balance.

    maybe something smaller ?

I would add a large mirror or canvas behind that small painting. Love your room

i have this large mirror. but im not sure that it works in the room.

I did read your thread a few days ago so please forgive me for ignoring recent posts. I believe JudyGDesigns mentioned this already and I forgot why you didnt like the idea, but what about using the large rectangular mirror over the buffet with the painting in front as she suggested? And perhaps a canvas in the place of a mirror on the left wall?

Again forgive me if this has already been discussed.

also i would perfer to keep my living room are carpet. what would you suggest for in dining room. im thinking something not too patterned

we have no window in the diningroom and liked the idea of the mirror reflecting light from the opposite window. its something to consider. i have this large painting that doesnt have a spot yet. it might possibly work where the mirror is?

i decided i want to keep the mirror where it is.

I like how you've hung the mirror, even though it's a bit high, it works to mimic a window there and your guests don't have to watch themselves eat!

I also think your original vignette on the buffet looks nice. I wouldn't add a second mirror. Maybe watch for another, slightly larger, framed piece of art to layer with what is there now.

A rug would finish it off nicely. Maybe something like this to complement the other rug without adding too much pattern or bold color:

You might also think about adding a lamp on one end of the buffet, to provide a little height to your arrangement.

Could your beautiful large painting go on the wall behind the loveseat?

That painting is beautiful. If you prefer the large mirror where it is perhaps that painting behind the small painting above buffet. Or I think just the large painting and you could use that lovely smaller one somewhere else?

I prefer and like light and neutral so to me a more neutral lighter rug in the dining room would look great especially if you like that pretty colorful painting there.

photo of painting abo e buffet. is it too big?

I don't know if there is a right or wrong. My dining room is a little closed in like yours and I have two big scenery paintings in there to give some of the feeling of having a window with a view. Mine are beach scenes too, so I never tire of looking at them while I eat in the dining room or sip my morning coffee, and dream of beach times . . .

It's really beautiful. I like it better behind the loveseat (perfect height, too!) than in the dining room. What do you think? If you hang it there, we'll probably be trying to have you change out that clock, though, lol! Project creep....

Maybe, if you hang the painting behind the loveseat, you could try the round mirror where the clock is now, just for better balance and shopping your house instead of buying something new.

I agree it is beautiful. I do love it over the love seat but I may love it as much over the buffet if it was hung. It is hard to know. Agree with Olychic about the creep and the clock. Haha

Can you rest it on something on both sides just to get a visual of it being hung over the buffet?

the round mirror doesnt fit where clock is now. it is too wide. the thermostat is in the way
  • 7 years ago

how would it look to hang an old rustic window above buffet and set the mountain painting infront? i would hang the window on its side.

i hung the painting. i dont mind the clock next to it but maybe i dont have an eye for it either

It looks great, I love the painting there.

I am having a hard time visualizing that window there in the dining room. It may feel a little rustic in that lovely room which doesn’t feel so rustic maybe. I wish I could do mock ups!

The painting really adds something to your living room. If you think the clock looks good in real life, then that's all that matters.

I would not hang that window in your dining room. Your dining room, as first posted, looks better than most folks' "after" pics. I'd let it be, but keep your eye out for a bigger pic to replace or add to the one that's there. But in the meantime, it looks very nice as it is. Think about a rug and see what you want to change (if anything) after you find one you like.

Char , here are some ideas for making your “too small” framed art appear larger.

thank you all for your ideas. we found a painting for a really good price and couldnt resist. i really like it over the buffet. The only thing we arent sure about now is the fact that all our wall decor is rectangular. is it a pro lem? we could pissibly switch out our rectangular mirror with the round one.

That looks great Char! I agree about the mirror, a round one would look nice. That one is too slim to turn the other way but maybe a much larger rectangular mirror hung vertically vs horizontally.

Love how your new painting looks there, Char. It’s just right ! —-I would definitely switch out the rectangular mirror with your round one. 1) Your furniture is all very angular already. 2) The art and the current mirror are too the same in size and shape. 3) IMO, I think the round mirror is just prettier.
so if i switch out the mirror what height do i hang the mirror? are the rules different for dining room?

You have a good eye and a very nice space.

Put the round one there and let us see where it hangs...

They say things can be hung lower in dining rooms, however personally , for a mirror, I don’t think people seated necessarily want to see themselves while eating, lol. I think overall it should be slightly lower at midpoint than your current one is. —Something that might help you visualize what “ feels right “ is to trace the round mirror on a large paper and cut it out to make a template that you could try out in both a standing and seated position. — Short of that , you could also place painter’s tape at the top/ bottom and sides of where it would be on the wall and visualize it that way.

Sorry but that mirror is for use in a bedroom closet or behind a door, not for such a lovely, grand entertaining space. It makes the wall look like a pass thru at a diner.

Select some type of wall decor for that great wall. Could be art, could be something three dimensional, but your windows reflect on that wall and most mirror will just create glare.

Add some tall white vases that complement the frame on your painting and change the scale of the assembly of objects on your china cabinet.

I might consider doing something with the tray ceiling over your table, but I have no inspiration from your items quite yet.

Too small, and as I stated it's reflecting the glare in your windows. Better when a mirror is at 90 degrees to the windows or use a mirror that doesn't reflect a full image.

The reason I suggested the art is because I thought you needed some color in the room.

Think outside the box and think of other unique options for your wall that make an artistic statement.

i really struggle with that. thinking outside the box....

Give yourself a chance.............you have a lovely room and it deserves something spectacular. If you don't want to assemble something then just purchase something interesting.

I purchased three of these at HomeGoods a few months back and will be installing them on a wall in sequence

I just saw this at HomeGoods for less than 1/2 price. It was sprayed gold, but a can of spray paint only costs $4.

Another item I picked up at HomeGoods for less than 1/2 price.

Hi , Char. Just now got a notification for this thread.— It is really hard to tell how it will look when it is in isolation like that. —- How big is your current round mirror? Could you hang that up there , just on the old nail hole for now, for comparison( in size) to visualize it and also just to give an idea of how a round mirror would look there. —- BTW, I was never opposed to a mirror there, but as some were , I am not sure the idea of a piece that is a lot of little deconstructed mirrors will be all that different. — It is more contemporary, but I think your room is transitional and could go either way. - so, it is really up to how the size looks in the space and what you like better.
You have a beautiful home and taste! Have you tried the round mirror above the slim table, where the clock is/was? Might be a convenient spot to touch up lipstick or image in the way in/out the door, or a basket for keys, etc. Agree the mirror in the dining room is unnecessary and not interesting. Good luck!

here is a photo of the round mirror in dining room

What a difference. Do like it better but dare I say a much larger mirror would perhaps look better but maybe a verticle rectangle not horizontal like you had before and different to the new painting. Wish I could do a mock up! But still looks so much better imo..

The mirror is just ok because it is too small for the big wall. It is better than the rectangular one. A big piece of art like the one above would be ideal. The round mirror would look great over the console where the clock is now. Do you have a big art piece somewhere that you could try here?

im wondering if another peice of art would be too much art. with the large piece in the livingroom and the one above buffet in dining
  • 7 years ago

I'd try switching the current art (the large landscape) with the mirror and maybe call it a day for now. I like the idea of the landscape serving as a "window" for everyone at the table to see if you put it where the rectangular mirror used to be. Looks like if you hang the gold round mirror above the buffet it will be too high for folks to see themselves, which is a great thing! It will also go well with your plants on top of the buffet, possibly reflecting them a bit. At least that's how it seems to me.

You can never have too much art! I'm loving the one above the buffet. That worked out well! Something will come to you, so don't get something just to fill the space. Some mirror ideas..

    Big round mirror with plant...

here are afew of the pieces i have. Do any of these ideas look ok?

Here is what ive put together in dining room so far. im considering an accent cabinet on the left side of the wall that the mirror is on and an area carpet.
