Winter Sowing Flowers

last modified: 7 years ago

Hey everybody. I’m new to winter sowing. I am considering winter sowing some annual flowers and herbs, including petunias, forget-me-not, allysum, marigold, oregano, chives, rosemary, bachelor’s buttons, etc. I plan to sow them in pots in my cold frame (imitating the milk jug...) and letting them sit until the weather warms enough, watering if needed to keep the soil from drying out. I will also need to vent my cold frames if we get a warm day, because I have various brassicas and lettuce growing in there at the moment. We have had a fairly mild winter here, but looks as if we’ll have a below freezing spell this next week with temps bottoming out around 5 degrees. Would this affect my wintersown annuals?

I assume that this method essentially imitates volunteer plantings, letting plants come up when the time is right. Obviously, with starting plants in an unheated cold frame, figuring out when the time is right for warmer weather crops is a little tough, which leads me to winter sowing. Thoughts?

I’m located in northwestern Arkansas, zone 6. My average last frost is usually late April, give or take a couple of weeks.

Thanks,

Jacob
