NYC orchid folk figure well in Eric Hansen's 'Orchid Fever'. If you substituted 'cactus and succulent' for 'orchid', I can verify all the behaviours written about. We're literally crazy about our plants.

It's quite unusual for the plant to be unlabled too. I'm headed to our local show/sale tomorrow night.

I did some digging around my empty pots and found a greenhouse orchid container saying “Matsui”, maybe that’s what it is

For more context I got it in March 2018 from a gift shop at the show, so if that makes the unlabeled plant make more sense that might be it. I also recall it having a scent. I have had great success with Orchids, I find them rather easy to grow, it remains to be seen if this one will flower soon or if I need to give it more attention. I’m new to this one but it looks happy after a year

There are about 100,000 registered orchid hybrids. Can narrow it down a bit, perhaps. Look at the pics in the link and see if any are similar.

Gut feeling, I'd say you might see spring time blooms on it, if your culture has been good. It looks pretty happy, certainly not wrinkled pseudobulbs.

Did you check out oncidiums? Oncs come in a range of shapes and colors but yellow with purple/red/maroon/brown markings or splotches are most common.

Do you remember the flowers being fragrant?

Matsui is a common Japanese family name.

A solid, reliable name you will never have unless the gift shop you got it from can recall from whom they got it and if in turn that nursery knows what they sent. There are simply far too many look alike hybrids out there. (Unless you obtained a species ... but that is highly unlikely from a gift shop.)

As far as its care goes, it is a member of the Oncidium Alliance -- of that there is little doubt -- and its care will most likely fall under typical Oncidium care.
